VIslander Nelda Huggins advances to IAAF World Jr Semis

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Nelda Huggins became the second Virgin Islands female athlete to advance to the semifinal of an IAAF World Jr. Championships sprint event in the Territory’s history, when she reached the 200m semifinal on Thursday July 24, 2014 in Eugene, Oregon.

Huggins placed seventh in the semifinal in 24.31 seconds after running 24.03 for fourth and advanced to the semis in her debut. She was also a semifinalist at the World Youth Championships last year.

Huggins narrowly missed the 100m final on Tuesday by one position as the top 24 performers advanced. She was fourth in her 100m heat in 11.87 seconds.

Kyron McMaster had a non advancing time of 54.21 seconds in the Boys 400m Intermediate Hurdles after placing fourth in his heat on Wednesday morning. He was also a 2013 IAAF World Youth Championships qualifier in the open 400m.

Meanwhile at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland

As athlete Ashley Kelly reported from the Games, “Congratulations are in order for Amarah and Elinah Phillips, they both recorded Personal Bests thus far and they are truly a sight to see in the pool. Congrats to Joe Chapman for making it through the rounds and improving his rankings. Joe and Elinah continue competition tomorrow. Happy Belated Birthday to the President of the Olympic Committee Ephraim Penn, we surprised him with a cake and card to help celebrate his birthday while he is away from home. We hope he enjoyed the rest of the festivities!”

Deputy Premier Dr the Hon Kedrick D. Pickering and his wife visited the Athlete compounds over the weekend and spent some time with the team and took a special tour around the village.

“It was great to see a familiar face here to support us so far away. In addition, we also were visited by Virgin Gorda native Amber Wheatley. Amber is a medical student studying in the UK and was visiting Scotland for a youth camp” noted Kelly.

On Sunday Karene King placed 19th overall in women's 100m in Glasgow. She ran 11.93 to finish 5th in heat 4. Tahesia Harrigan-Scott pulled out of the games.

Eldred Henry heaved the shot put 17.08 to finish 16th overall.

He did not compete in the long jump event, and it remains unclear if he will be fit enough to continue the event.
