VI’s football fans witness thrilling Super Bowl 51 comeback win
The game turned out to be one of the most thrilling Super Bowl games in history with the New England Patriots falling behind 28-3 but still managing to complete what many referred to as the largest comeback in the history of the game to stun the Atlanta Falcons 34- 28.
Reactions
“Didn’t think they were going to do it actually,” one fan from the US state of Massachusetts told Virgin Islands News Online following the game that was televised at the Loose Mongoose on Trellis Bay, Beef Island.
“The Falcons were a good team, it didn’t look very good” she continued, adding that “it was a surprise but not a surprise.”
On the other hand, a Falcons fan was most naturally disappointed.
“Disappointed in the Falcons, they had the upper hand all the time and in the end, they just give up the game,” he said. “But it was a good game.”
Just before the crucial end of the game the showers came pouring in and caused everyone to scamper away to shelter at the Loose Mongoose, nonetheless, the ample covered space allowed everyone to enjoy the remainder of the game which was a huge disappointment to the majority of the crowd who were Falcon fans.
Large crowd converge at Captain Mulligan’s
Captain Mulligan’s in Nanny Cay was by far the choice spot to view the big game as persons had three giant projector screens as well as several large televisions to take in the game.
Persons were seen in their NFL shirts in support of their team. There was also a Falcons flag which was carried around in celebratory mood when the Falcons stunningly went ahead of the Patriots in the first half.
Such was the large crowd at Captain Mulligan’s that persons were forced to park on the main road.
Aromas Cigar & Martini Bar
Many persons who preferred the indoor setting to watch Super Bowl 51 made their way to Aromas Cigar and Martini Bar on Tortola Pier Park where patrons also had the opportunity to win two 50 inch televisions.
Alington Johnson won the first television at the halftime drawing while Juan Carlos won the other in the drawing done after the game.
The atmosphere was great, we had a sold out crowd and everyone was into the game. It was exactly what we wanted, a great game that went down to the wire. I would like to thank Caribbean Cellars for working with us on the Coors Light promotion where two 50 inch TVs were given away,” Owner of Aromas Cigar and Martini Bar, Sean J. Palmer told Virgin Islands News Online.
Sister Islands
Football fans on the sister islands were not to be left out as they made their way to their choice spots, including Foxy’s and Hendo’s Hideout on Jost Van Dyke.
Greatest comeback
Meanwhile, the New England Patriots produced the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history to beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in overtime and claim a fifth title in the most dramatic of circumstances.
The Patriots trailed by 25 points in the third quarter but recovered to level at 28-28 and force the extra period - the first in Super Bowl history.
Quarterback Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr led the recovery, finishing with a record 466 yards en route to being named the Super Bowl's Most Valuable Player for a fourth time.
The turnaround was completed when James White scored on a two-yard run - taking his personal haul for the game to 20 points.
The previous biggest deficit overcome by the eventual Super Bowl champions was 10 points, a record emphatically shattered by the Patriots on an incredible night at Houston's NRG Stadium, which also featured a spectacular half-time show by Lady Gaga.
The singer opened her set with Woody Guthrie's civil rights anthem This Land Is Your Land, which many saw as a gentle but pointed rebuke to the Donald J. Trump administration.
