Virgin Islanders keeping Virgin Islanders down – Sharie B.Y. de Castro
Crab in a barrel mentality
de Castro was recently a guest on the Morning Ride show hosted by Pearl A. Peart aka ‘Gadiethz’ and, when asked a question about outside influence in the Virgin Islands, she responded, “…I went as far as to post a status on Facebook yesterday saying that I am fed-up and I truly am because we like to say that the expatriates this and that the people coming into our territory and doing this and that to Virgin Islanders but the truth is if we are to be honest with ourselves it’s Virgin Islanders keeping Virgin Islanders down and it is high time that we mash up the crab in a barrel mentality because all of us have to eat.”
The young entrepreneur further stated that she believes there is no need for people to be fighting down each other because the Virgin Islands is “blessed enough for everybody’s belly to be full. We have to stop the envy, jealousy and the greed because our ancestors are rolling in their graves and we literally have to do everything within our power to respect and honour their legacy.”
Blinded by political allegiance
Plugging a political cord, Mr Peart alluded to the alleged discord in the two major political parties in the territory and asked Ms de Castro if she feels the territory needs another party at this time. The former school teacher responded, “I truly do not believe the solution is another party, I don’t believe the solution is politics on a whole. We have become so blinded by political allegiance in this territory that we are extremely missing the mark.”
Chanting that it’s a time to be real, Ms de Castro sought to remind her fellow voters that while there is more than enough blame to go around “I would settle that by saying no matter your political affiliation, understand that we have to disassociate ourselves from these political hang-ups and put country first. We are the government and if government fails our country fails.”
She challenged that a serious call be made to Premier Dr The Hon D. Orlando Smith (AL) and his government to hear the cries of the people and that they put forth mediums that would allow the people to speak before any contract involving the territory’s finances is inked.
Youth don’t want handouts
Speaking on behalf of Virgin Islands’ youth, the 26-year-old de Castro said the youth are no longer bending to the culture of hand-outs. “I believe that young people are coming to the realisation that the little handouts are here today and gone tomorrow but if we can be given adequate room to just allow our passions, our businesses, our careers, whatever they are, to be realised, we’ll be in a much better place.”
Many will agree with the young outspoken de Castro that the answer to the root problems of the territory of the VI is in its Christian foundation. “And I’ll say it this way… truly I believe we have to realise that the enemy, and I am a child of God…. I believe the enemy has launched an all-out attack on our generation to kill our destiny and to kill the future of the Virgin Islands and as a territory founded on Christian principles we have to understand the fundamental necessity, prayer and God in government, school, our community every facet of our society, because we have to just destroy this negative vibe of death, crime, disrespect whatever it is if we are to truly see a Virgin Islands in the future that we all want to be proud of.”

There are some Virgin islanders who feel the way you do about your circle. Makes you look bad.
Otherwise, this was a good read. Thanks for speaking up.
Your political future is sure!
