VINO responds to pro-govt news site’s article on apology to Minister!
We are not surprised that yet again an online news site that many regard as a pro-government propaganda machine, BVI Platinum News, has seen it fit to make news on a routine media incident.
Virgin Islands News Online continues to take its responsibilities in the media market very seriously and that is why today we can boast of being the number one online news site.
We are aware of the relationship between both Myron V. Walwyn and the pro-government online news site BVI Platinum and so its article about an apology was expected.
It is no secret that many regard Mr. Walwyn as a very divisive figure in Virgin Islands’ politics and because our news site has cemented our reputation for high standards and being fair and balanced, we continue to give the Minister for Education and Culture fair and objective coverage.
Whenever he is covered on Virgin Islands News Online, regardless of what the articles are about, Mr. Walwyn attracts a lot of attention via blogs, as most often he says and proposes polices that many readers and observers regard as controversial.
Over a one-year period many of the site’s readers have blogged comments at stories relating to Mr. Walwyn that were not the views of Virgin Islands News Online or its management and staff and some of them, which both sides agreed, were not appropriate but inadvertently posted.
For that we had no objections in removing such blogs and issuing an apology to Mr. Walwyn. In fact we would have done this for any citizen and because of our professional disposition we continue to disassociate ourselves with any inappropriate comments from the public posted on Virgin Islands News Online.
Attacks on the media
It appears that the pro-government news site BVI Platinum delights, like Mr. Walwyn, in attacking VINO, however, we will continue to set the record straight as many continue to call, phone, e-mail, text and come into our newsroom expressing their unwavering support for our news site and endorse the high level of professional journalism and investigative reporting we have come to be known for.
While we have information about default judgments won against two other media houses and some interesting information on the same pro-government online news site, now pretending to be self righteous including where they themselves allegedly had to make an apology and major corrections to an article, we choose not to use this information to get at anyone.
Furthermore, there have been some scandalous, libelous and unfortunate allegations circulating on the internet for months about one of BVI Platinum’s staff; however, we have stayed clear of such claims since we strongly believe that any attack against one media house is an attack against all.
We continue to say thanks to the many readers, advertisers and our media partners locally, regionally and internationally for their steadfast and consistent support. We are humbled and will continue to maintain the high level of professionalism in the news business.
