Vincy man gets 6 years for importing drugs into VI!
Dexter Chance appeared in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, where Senior Magistrate Valerie Stephens disclosed that his sentencing was a decision in consideration since he had no previous convictions.
Chance was represented by Attorney Stephen Daniels.
Thirty-nine year old Chance and two other Vincentians, Gareth McDowall and Carlos Sutherland along with Virgin Islanders Dale Nibbs, Khoy Penn and Asif Glasgow were arrested and charged for allegedly being involved in a drug bust that occurred back in 2008. The locals were charged with being concerned in the importation of cocaine, unlawful possession of cocaine and conspiracy to supply cocaine while the three Vincentians were charged with importation of drugs.
The three Vincentians were also extradited from their homeland to stand trial in 2011.
Nibbs along with the three Vincentians Chance, McDowall and Sutherland were found guilty while Glasgow and Penn were found not guilty. Nibbs was found not guilty on the unlawful possession of cocaine charge and guilty on the other two charges.
On January 23, 2008, the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force seized and searched a chartered catamaran at Hodges Creek with some 61 kilos of cocaine on-board. The cocaine is said to have had a street value of $1 million US dollars.
Local Police alleged that the shipment of cocaine came from St. Vincent and that Chance, McDowall and Sutherland were involved in the shipment of the drugs.
Chance and his two colleagues were initially facing two other charges: conspiracy to import a controlled drug and unlawful possession of cocaine. However, on March 21, 2011 those charges were dismissed by Magistrate Stephens due to arguments put forward by the men’s lawyers indicating that the complaints were not laid against the men in a timely fashion.
