ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Both Cavaliers C.C. and Vincy C.C. recorded victories in the last round of the Digicel Twenty/20 Cricket Tournament at the Greenland Field yesterday, Sunday July 20, 2013 to reach next Sunday’s final.

The defending champions Cavaliers had a relatively comfortable path to the final with a 75-run win over Vikings C.C. They also got a little help from the Vikings fielders and an excellent 74 from Dorian Auguiste.

Having won the toss Vikings, knowing that only a quick successful run chase would give them a chance of making the final following their loss last week to the Vincy, asked the Cavaliers to bat. They and then set about causing their own demise with a series of drop catches and misfields that allowed Auguiste, who finished with 14 fours, and the Tournaments leading run scorer, Teddy Nankishore (26), to compile a 77 run opening partnership inside 8 overs.

The middle order then all made quick contributions, led by an unbeaten 27 from skipper Jagnarine Persaud and the same score from Vishal Bharat, as the Cavaliers raced along to 210-7 at the end of their allotted 20 overs.

Vaden Walker was the most successful Vikings bowler with 3 for 29 with Bashir Hydar picking up a brace from his 4 over spell.

In reply, the Vikings never really got into the chase and lost wickets at regular intervals.

The opening pair of Richard Fredericks and Rohan Lyndsay struggled to rotate the strike or hit the required boundaries and when Lyndsay was run out in the 6th over he had yet to score. Fredericks had fallen for 21 in the previous over, caught Nankishore from the bowling of Persaud and apart from 48 by Walker that was as good as it got.

Six Vikings fell in single figures, three of them with the team total in the 30’s and another 3 as the score crept into the 40’s. However, Jamal Mickle with a swashbuckling undefeated 39 at least made sure the Vikings reply reached triple figures as they closed on 136 for 9.

Vincy defeats VG

The Vincy were made to work slightly harder for their victory as the shorthanded VG defended their total with enthusiasm and skill.

Dennis Allistar was the mainstay off a batting line up missing Derol Redhead and Irving Hendrikson as he complied 73, including four boundaries and eight maximums and pushed his team to a respectable, defendable 170 for 8.

Jeunik Mingo crashed 25 and Eldon Williams 17 along the way as Kendrik Leslie once again took crucial wickets to finish with 4 for 32 from 3 overs. Morry Ollivierre finished with 2 for 30 and Turby Xavier, probably the best of the bowlers on display, was unlucky to finish wicketless, but only conceded 14 runs from his 4 overs.

In reply, the Vincy were never really comfortable and it took them into the 18th over to finally score the winning runs courtesy of Monty Butler’s big swinging bat.

He scored an unbeaten 40 to guide his team over the finish line and into the final against the Cavaliers in an innings that included three fours and four sixes.

At the top of the order, Keelan Robin spent some valuable time at the crease in scoring 46 and Austin McDowall added 30 as what seemed a relative easy chase gave the Vincy supporters some nerve jangling moments.

Always a bowler short, Joel Williams marshaled his troops well and led from the front with a fiery burst of pace bowling to finish with 2 for 35, whilst Jolyon Wilson, Jeffrey Demming and Leslie Ambrose each got one.

A mouth watering final is now all set for next Sunday at 2 P.M. on the Greenland Field and fans will be waiting anxiously too see what is planned for the conclusion of the return of cricket to Greenland.
