ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The resounding call continues to bellow through all media forms for 'from here' entertainers to be given a fair share of the events spotlight especially during Emancipation festival celebrations in the Virgin Islands (VI).

This—while not a new cry—was the centre of an August 16, 2019, social media live Facebook stream on the JTV page, by six men in the VI entertainment industry, David Thomas, Eustace Freeman aka “Boss”, Dirk L. Walters aka “Dirkee”, Reynold Phillips aka ‘King Paido’, Jason A. Frett aka ‘Ritical’ along Andy A. Jeffers who was the moderator for the show.

The Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee (VIF&FC) was blasted for committing the same sins as previous committees despite the fact, according to Mr Walters, they were forewarned and urged against such ahead of the executing of the 65th festivities.

'Utter Nonsense' – Mr Walters

“I think its utter nonsense and total disrespect. We have had meetings about this where ‘Boss’ was present including the Chairman of the Festival and Fairs Committee [Carnel D. Clyne] was in attendance as well as the Minister of Culture [Dr. the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley] was in attendance. And we spoke about this, the lack of respect for the local artistes and I want people to stop this utter nonsense of referring to persons as local artists,” expressed Walters.

“I am only local because I live, I reside in the Virgin Islands, I am an international artist and producer and brand, all of us here Ritical, David, Boss all of us. So that’s the first thing and I think it is utter disrespect for any committee to put out a video that’s celebrating artists from all around the world separate from who is right here that has paid their dues,” he said.

Locals side-lined

He drew reference to a promotional video put out by the VIF&FC which highlighted only acts that were not resident in the VI, “and I have not seen one ad come out saying showtime, Extreme, VIBE, how many road march winners,” he said.

He supported the point raised by others on the panel stating that residents in the VI are artist that have produced and published high-level quality music, “Like myself and when you put them in the village, I personally really am not concerned about what time I play,” he said.

“But at the same time if you want to promote your own people you can’t put extreme or showtime on at 8 O’Clock, 9 O’Clock and expect, because you know the village, you know it’s the culture, it’s how we train the people, people come out of their house here very late.”

Walters took issue with the time at which the 65th Emancipation Festival Celebration Honourees, the Prime Time band was put on stage to play, “But at the same time you want to put on Prime Time at 8:30 – 9:00 in the night.”

He felt that it was the wiser thing to do of putting PrimeTime at “Prime Time” to perform for a larger crowd.

“And another thing too I want them to understand, I want to reiterate the fact that I, Dirk Walters… am not in no way form or fashion against any foreign entertainer,” he said noting that he has friends throughout the entertainment fraternity.

Give resident artist top priority – Walters

“But I am saying you have to put your people as top priority.” According to Walters, resident entertainers continue to “Get knock about” by the VIF&FC.

Walters’ position was supported by the others on the panel and even before he made his voice heard, another panellist Mr Frett had blasted the committee for not putting resident entertainers in the spotlight especially in the area of marketing.

“Festival committees over the years have not put enough emphasis and shown appreciation and encouragement for the BVI entertainers so to speak as far as with the ads,” he said.

“The different ways in which they put your pictures, even in their utterance you only hear about the international acts verbally,” Mr Frett underscored.

This been going on for over 30 yrs... The blame can be shared between all parties... The committee has a responsibility to booth owners to ensure that people come out and that they have fun.... The local Bands and artists has a responsibility to prove that they can do that...Ecstasy came to mind. No matter what time they played they pull a crowd.. I personally think that some of the local bands and artists are better that the imported ones. Syster Jouce and Ritical to me should be big time.. Something holding them back can't put my hands on it. When outside promotors don't have a hunger for BVI artist shows something is wrong. When you only hear about some of these bands and entertainers few months before festival something is wrong. When we see the same musician showing up on stage with 3 4 different bands something is wrong .. I do believe local bands and entertainers should be better paid so they can improve their marketing and their sound... I also think that bands and Entertainers hould prove to be active 6 months before Festival with their own members before Eligible for Festival Gigs. Don't like the idea of just coming together for Festival. King Paido is a true professional Festival act. Every year he is on stage win lose big pay small pay or get cheated I never heard him bashed before .. Nice they can come together and address this old issue. I think they deserve better pay but they to should recognized their responsibility to market their product work hard to be better at their craft. Pull the crowds. I think getting more or better pay can motivate them and help them do that..I was so proud of VYbz this year they hold their own against Sugar at EEnd Jouvey. They were good all through Festival.. Evolution band has a good unique sound...Keep working. Stay together.

This is good. Nice they can come together to address this important issue. Hope they can stay together and keep fighting because that's the only way change will come. Staying together is the biggest challenge hope they don't have to use their energy and time fighting each other and focus on the task for which brought them together .. "Compromise not Ego" ..."Votes not Dictators"

How much of our own we’ve put in the spotlight? How many of them you support and endorse? We have runners, basketball players, entrepreneurs, musicians, fashion designers etc. whenever we put our people in the front they never get supported. Practice what you preach. The BVI only supported Mc Master when he hit gold; that was 3 months ago,are we still showing the love and encouragement?

When these local bands learn to play proper music for all to enjoy, then they will be highly recognized. The foolishness these bands play certainly cannot attract no crowd.

@Outspoken: So true. I refuse to pay money for the foolishness these bands playing. They this turning on a rhythm box is music. They need to invest in themselves take a few musics and voice classes. You will be surprise how far this will get you. Stop waiting on others to do it.there is no denying that they have talent itbjust needs to be develop properly. Again invest in your self and hone your skills then others will be willing to do the same. Give them something worth while.

What’s the point the BVIF put they’re own in the spotlight? Since when the BVI actually support someone anyone in a positive spotlights? The mindset culture around here is sad and discouraging. I completely agree with @go sit down. Until you begin to be different and support people who’s in the spotlight especially those of good, we will always have an issues. The Solutions begins with (yourself) NOT just in music but all things that’s of good for the community.

I think its the mentality that was brutalized into us by the white man on the slave plantation. Men like Arthur Hodge and others who demonstrated to us who satan is, that has created this crab in the barrel mentality that continues to be a stumbling block to our unity and progress. There are serious issues from our past that continue to haunt us and must be addressed. We can continue to sing and dance around the real issues but until they are dealt with we will continue to waste precious time and become second class citizens in our homeland.

60% of the population is not from here. Most of that 60% are from other Caribbean islands that collectively enjoy the dancehall, calypso and soca from the bigger islands like Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados, St Vincent, Antigua, St. Vincent etc. Our VI brand of calypso is only really enjoyed here, Anguilla, St Kitts and St Maarten and they are not a part of the 60% that live here. So what does that mean, it means that when VIBE, Extreme, etc are on stage at the Village you are only getting 40% attendance of the people who live here which ultimately means the BVI Governments financial commitment and booth owners will not see a return. The festival / emancipation celebration music performances have to cater to everyone for them to make money. Its not about sidelining local musicians. This is a money argument not a we vs them.

And you failed to mention that out of that 40% nearly 2/3 of them leave island during festival period. And they still want to talk support local whilst they on their cruise or in Barbados or Antigua carnival. We can talk support local until Jesus comes if their is no local support who do you expect to fill the gap? The people who not from here?
