ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Two young dancers in the Virgin Islands (VI) have scored big at the regional EVP Caribbean Youth Dance-off competition, taking the titles of the most promising duo and overall winners of the competition that saw performers from several regional countries.

Dancing out of the Nouveau Royale Performance Ensemble, founded by twin sisters Lakiesha R. A. Claxton and Natisha T. Claxton, the dancers- Chanecia A. Pinnock and Shayvanie K. Karran- walked away with the coveted spot in the competition veld virtually on November 28, 2020.

“We had to do the videos and send them in. The competition was done via Zoom [and] we competed against many different Caribbean countries, they had nine entries,” co-founder Lakiesha told Virgin Islands News Online (VINO).

According to Lakiesha, the performers danced to a song from the soundtrack of the Harriett Tubman Movie mixed with a song from a local artiste.

Mentorship & dance apparel

The competition was themed 'The Fight Against Discrimination'.

"We did a duet kind of performance last minute because we had less than a week to prepare for this week, but we still dominated, we still came out on top,” Lakiesha said.

As part of their prize, the winning duo will receive a mentorship programme from Fashion and Caribbean Next Top Model icon Richard Young, along with dance apparel from the Experience Dance store.

The dance video was shot by DRAX Media and edited by Blaxsmith entertainment Inc. All the music was mixed by Blaxsmith Entertainment, with Lakiesha and sister Natisha doing choreography.
