VI supports 49th 'Agrifest' on St Croix

ESTATE LOWER LOVE, St Croix, USVI- The 49th Annual Agriculture and Food Fair opened on St Croix, US Virgin Islands (USVI) on Saturday, February 15, 2020 and saw a number of persons from the Virgin Islands making use of the free transportation provided by the Andrew A. Fahie-led Government of the Virgin Islands to attend the event.

The 3-day event, which ends on Monday, February 17, 2020, is being held at the Rudolph Shulterbrandt Agricultural Complex in Estate Lower Love.

Agrifest, as it's also called, is dedicated to the memory of Lena Schulterbandt who is credited with starting the event in 1970 along with her late husband, Rudolf Shulterbrandt, a former Department of Agriculture commissioner in the USVI.

One of the local legislators spotted at Agrifest was Deputy Speaker and At Large Representative, Hon Neville A. Smith.

The USVI leaders who spoke at the opening ceremony were Senator President Novelle E. Francis, Delegate to Congress Stacey E. Plaskett, and Governor Albert Bryan Jr.

What’s available @ Agrifest?

The event has catered for a a variety of persons and interests and includes a Farmer’s Market with livestock. Other itens available are ground provision, fruits, a variety of plants for consumption as well as for decoration, clothing, jewelry, craft, food and drinks, and a children’s playground with different rides.

Among those honoured yesterday were Mr Grantley Samuel, who won Crop Farmer of the Year while Edwin Russell aka ‘Eddie’ won Livestock Farmer of the Year.

Among the close to 100 persons from the VI who attended the 49th Annual Agriculture and Food Fair were farmers and fisherfolks.

What are red pods called? Any event, this is a source for lowering food cost. Eat local eat what is in season!
