ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Social Development Department of the Virgin Islands has embarked on an initiative this year that recognises past as well as current professionals for their contribution to the Territory ahead of the 25th anniversary celebration of Senior Citizens Month in May, 2014.

The Department will highlight a number of men from various categories of workers such as carpenters, bankers, musicians, teachers, tailors, cobblers, police officers, educators, among others.

Beginning with educators in the month of September, the Department will honour the men under the theme: “Unleash the Power of Age through our Local Educators”.

The honourees include Mr Conrad Maduro, Mr Hugo Vanterpool, Mr Reuben Vanterpool, Mr Arundell Donovan, Mr Alfred Christopher, Mr Louis Walters, and Mr Roy Harrigan. Each of the men will be featured on local news websites and newspapers.

Department Supervisor, Ms Shirma George said an attempt was made this year to put a different spin on the annual exercise to instead recognise the ordinary men of society who may not otherwise be so well known.

“We want a different calibre, we don’t just want the same people [featured] every year. We want to give caption to other persons who have paid tribute to the Territory outside of those [that are well known],” Ms George stated.

According to the Department, their impact on our Territory and our children can never be truly afforded, and their special talents are rare indeed and part of the great design of humanity.

A grand celebration is expected to take place in May 2014 during Senior Citizens month.

The initiative is being piloted solely by the Social Development Department under the Ministry of Health and Social Development.

I know you can't honour everybody one time but how about Dr. Quincy Lettsome, Dr. Charles Wheatley and others including females? What was the criteria for the selection?

How about the "more senior" gentlemen. Even though according to social security standards, Mr. Rueben Vanterpool, Walters and Hugo Vanterpool are classified as seniors, wouldn't it be more meaningful to have the more "older" persons than those who I would still classify as young men?

Not because they look young means they are young . They are just what they are seniors! and they have contributed more than you will in your lifetime. Clearly your statement is coming from a very hateful, spiteful place.

Is there a reason for excluding women from the VI Seniors honorees list?

NDP does not care about women that is why none is in the Cabinet and Deloris and Alvara are treated like second class
