VI Power Lifters reap 7 medals at regional championship!

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Virgin Islands has secured seven medals including three gold medals in the recently held 10th IPL/NAPF North American Regional Powerlifting Championship which took place in the Cayman Islands.

The Virgin Islands placed sixth overall at the end of the competition, with Shevon Reefe securing two gold medals in the 120K Classic category. He had a best squat and new BVI Classic Squat record of 237.5k (523.5 lbs).

Another Virgin Islander contender, Mark Kendall, won a gold and a silver in the 83 kilo Classic Category, while Don Hadaway won 1 silver and 2 bronze in the 105k classic category.

A silver medal was won by Cliff Williams, who competed in the 120 plus Kilo Classic Category. He also sat a new BVI classic Benchpress record of 190.0 kilo (419.0 lbs).

The competition was won by Team USA who came up with a total of 54 while the VI’s medals earned them 34 points and the 6th place finish.

Ten countries participated in this year’s championship, namely, USA, Puerto Rico, Cayman Islands, USVI, Trinidad & Tobago, BVI, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Guyana, and Canada.

Team BVI which is managed and coached by Steve George. In an exclusive interview with George, he said he could not have asked for a better "Team BVI".

"Competing against countries like the USA Canada Mexico etc, I am proud of my lifters. They were the only lifters without the benchpress shirts or power suits but was giving these other lifters a run for their money. At the end of the competition they were well aware that Team BVI mean serious business in the classic or raw division."

The next meet the local lifters are eying is the World Benchpress Championships in Denver Colorado on November 19 & 20, 2012.
