FORT BURT, Tortola, VI - At the occasion of being inducted as an honorary member of the Lion's Club of Tortola His Excellency Governor John S. Duncan OBE singled out the Virgin Islands (VI) as one of the Overseas Territories that has been demonstrating true democracy and its politicians are not being put behind bars.

The induction ceremony was held at the Fort Burt Hotel yesterday November 13, 2014 in the presence of a room full of some of the most senior and prominent Lions in the Territory.

Governor Duncan said that for the time he has been here he has discovered the VI to be vibrant. "It has a vibrant and active democracy, and it has not had some of the problems that other Overseas Territories have," said Governor Duncan.

He said that it's a tendency of looking at the Overseas Territories and if one of them has problems persons tend to apply them to all the Overseas Territories.

"That is not the case of the BVI. We have avoided putting our senior politicians behind bars as has happened in a number of places not too far from here,” he said.

He said that when that came close to happening there was a vote of no confidence and the government fell. "And that is a test of true governance and the Governor does not have to intervene as has happened in a number of other Territories," according to Governor Duncan.

He said that this does not mean that things are perfect in the Virgin Islands. "That is not to say that everything is perfect or that there are no challenges,” he said.

He further said, "But I am reassured by everything I have seen in this community and its ability to rise to challenge."

He reflected that back in the 1970s the VI was a very quiet and peaceful place with not much industry and activities but is today a cornerstone of a global economy with an active political process and active businesses working together.

Having already participated in an activity of the Lions Club of Tortola Governor Duncan further committed to working with the group in their endeavour to make life better for all in the communities of the Territory.

Ummm..Governor? The reason our Politicians have not been locked up is because we would not have any Politicians left to run the country into the ground. Are you listening Governor?

We see what we want to see. There are plenty of wrong doing here that are worthy of jail sentences. The problem is we don't want to see things for what the are. The politicians are really taking advantage of there positions by leaking development projects to their families and setting up companies to benefit from the leaks indirectly. The ports project is ripe with corruption and everyone is looking the other way.

He said that he did not see any victimisation. He needs to check out the BVI Public Service.

How exactly does he do this when everyone smiles in his face and then posts nasty comments? How does he get the raw data?

this is a sad day when a new governor panders to the government in power without due diligence in investigating allegations. No senior politicians are put in jail because he is not investigating them as asked.
Everything he has said tells me he has preconceived notions and doesn't want to rock the boat. If this was a true democracy, he shouldn't be so high profile and talk to the people. It is a subtle discrimination and even subtler corruption.

I think it is a good idea if he comes back to the UK, since the poor man has enough problems in the UK. Maybe that is why he is not functioning here.

'True Democray' what an absolute FARCE. Is this man aware that the majority are subjected to taxation without representation. How is that a true democracy?

looking into the future, NDP projects and plans are better for the B VI, but right now, they look like a confused team. I suggest they regroup and come with a uniform message, ( adopt the Bob-Marley strategy) "explain things so a child can understand" cut out all these big words and fancy speeches. Maybe they need to higher Gaditz, ( like Gaditz or not, he is a good sales man ). But then you have Mr. Faulkner and Cromwell those are your two best "uterlize them" . If you need the face of a politician use Ronnie the hon Skelton he comes across as genuine, a man of his word, people are more in tune to listen to him than the rest... Get your act together now, or you will lose

it's just since they got in office that they've become all fancy. Prior to that they spoke just as "we." Excuse me, I mean 'us."
