ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Radio talk show host Doug Wheatley last night October 28, 2014 stoked controversy by saying that sooner or later the Virgin Islands will have to confront the question of same-sex marriage.

He was speaking on the radio talk show Speak Out BVI aired on ZBVI 780 AM and touched on a range of topics including medical marijuana and gay marriage.

“There is something else that the community does not talk about here neither does the Government offer any official position on gay marriages and this is something that I am going to discuss at a convenient time on the show,” he said.

“Our collective approach as BVIslanders to the whole matter of gay marriages but so far we have had no official comment from the Government, the Cabinet or anybody on that,” he said.

One man who called into the show said, “We are a Christian community and we are not interested in gay marriage!”

Wheatley said in response, “I think what is going to happen is that eventually we are going to have a discussion or debate on it and the views will come out from the religious and other aspects. Eventually there will have to be discussion on it because the BVI will be confronted with it one day and we ought to have our position on it.”

But just as the host was about to conclude the show another caller said that he does not care whether his neighbour is gay, since he would prefer a gay neighbour rather than one who is a criminal.

“As far as I am concerned gay people are ten times better than wife beaters, guys who impregnate young girls and drug dealers and drug users,” the man said. “People breaking into your house when you go to work are more detrimental to the community than gay marriage. These people don’t bother nobody,” the caller said.

God help these islands should they decide to become independent and do this ting. As one ex-politician said, the only independent, is financial independent, that we are not

NO ISSUE HERE, 2 CONSENTING ADULTS ARE ALLOWED TO GO UNDER THE SHEETS. I do not see how this is important to the BVI. It is Ebola or Chick mosquito, our crime and umemployment rate are so little you can hardly hear about them

Who cares about people's sex life? There are more important things like crime, no jobs for the youths and getting NDP out of office to think about.

The positioning of a male within the family provides leadership and likewise the female provides the capacity for love. No one can doubt the love capacity of a mother and the guidance of a father. However, today our young men are looking like females and our young women are disenchanted by young men who seem to have no real direction and purpose.

This can be changed when men take their rightful place in families and lead in a godly fashion.

so if a family is governed and led by the mother and the father is passive and takes on the role of the carer, they are also disenchanted and without a purpose? these things are happening now BTW when a woman works and a man just stays home and takes care of the kids and the home. The society puts so much emphasis on the roles a man and a woman must have without realizing that taking car of a family and children is a shared responsibility that is not solely based on the sex being a man and a woman.

stupid talk like this will always come up in "modern-day-bvi" because we no longer putting God first in our ways as we develop our islands...to each his own; my problem is when you have these "men" going both ways, all them doing is contaminating the pool of woman for me to pick from!!!!!

so many righteous, hypocrites and bigots here! with all the things that are happening like robberies, adultery, concubinage, incest, rape, statutory rape, widespread drug use, why not let these people decide to live their lives at peace.. Being gay is not a lifestyle choice and not even a personal choice..
