ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Several Members of the House of Assembly of the Virgin Islands paid their respects to the late former Prime Minister of the UK Margaret Thatcher by signing the book of condolences at Governor’s House today, April 17, 2013.

Baroness Thatcher passed away on April 8, 2013.

Among those offering condolences were First District Representative Hon. Andrew A. Fahie, Eight District Representative Hon. Marlon A. Penn and Sixth District Representative Hon. Alvera Maduro-Caines.

Hon. Fahie described the former Prime Minister as a great lady and said she had a special place in her heart for Overseas Territories. He thought she was a firm and fair leader and said we will always remember her as a hero of the British political system.

Hon. Penn said the affectionately termed ‘Iron Lady’ would always be remembered as she had done much for politics in the UK and even globally; he added that she was one of the driving forces behind the fall of the Berlin Wall as well.

Hon. Maduro Caines stated that she had studied a lot about the former Prime Minister and noted that she was by far the UK PM she most admired. Her wish was that local female politicians would also follow in Lady Thatcher’s footsteps.

Governor William B. McCleary also offered respects to the former PM’s family. He noted that she was an important figure in British public life for many years and would be remembered as one of the longest serving Prime Ministers of the country.

A state funeral was held for the former leader earlier today in the UK with the Queen and other world leaders numbering among those in attendance.

According to Geoffrey Howe, one of her closest allies, Mrs Thatcher regarded the Nelson Mandela's African National Congress (ANC) as a 'typical terrorist organisation', as late as 1987.

Were the segregated blacks that lost their lives struggling for equality terrorists?

I wonder if Nelson Mandela will be sending condolences? It's day two following the death of Thatcher - no words of sadness from Mandela yet.

Certainly, no one will forget Mrs Thatcher’s determination to take on the most challenging of battles with a steady hand

Amidst the political differences I am pleased that at least some of our elected officials took time to be involved in something larger than themselves. Thatcher was a great & firm leader.

Hon. Maduro Caines, Im no fan of someon who calls a black person a terrorist in their own country fighting for better treatment. , i.e she was referring to nelson Mandela, did you notice he didn't event attend or was invited???
Actually Uk will never see a woman at the helm again because she closed the door for aspiring Uk females to hold such a title....Did I tell you that her own party booted her out of No.10!!!! The reason for all this fanfare, is that the Queen was attending!

She was so against immigration of non-whites into the Kingdom. Interestingly, it seemed that the country had moved forward-a bit-, albeit briefly, from such a terroristic past against foreigners.

Sadly, under the current PM Cameron, I'm afraid it's once again shifting back to the days of the "Iron Lady".
Perhaps, it is her policies that will forever remain. Such a tragedy. But with a group of people whose main concern is about their "numbers" or global population as an ethnic group, these types of actions are logical if not moreso required!

Although i understand someone from our oversea's territory had to go, i had no respect for this Bigot of a woman, she supported some of the most brutal regimes in history, Pol Pot and Augusto Pinochet, she also called Mandela a terrorist and supported the Apartheid in South Africa, Good Riddance!

The late Lady Thatcher's own wish was that a state funeral not be held in her honour. Her wish was granted, though, the funeral termed a 'ceremonial' funeral had the trappings of a state funeral. Given the prominence she restored to Britain on the world stage, a less fitting funeral would have been just that - less fitting. I personally thought that today's ceremony was one of understated pomp, and I was especially happy to note that there were no demonstrations. Despite what one's political views might be, one should be able to rise above the subjective politics and consider the tremendous contributions Lady Thatcher made.

May her soul rest in eternal peace!

      Huffington Post:

"....Going against overwhelming mainstream sentiment, Thatcher refused to impose sanctions on South Africa's apartheid regime and went so far as to describe the African National Congress in 1987 as terrorists. "Anyone who thinks it is going to run the government in South Africa is living in cloud-cuckoo land," she said of the ANC at the time. ....."

hope she does not rot in hell

look at what she did to the Scots! because of Thatcher's policy. The Scots lost they shipyards to other countries. Yes, London became the financial capital of Europe, but the German remain the manufacturing giants and pratically runs Europe. Such irony. Angela in charge. Adolf rollin in his grave.

Admiring this right wing nut, granted she broke the glass barrier and became PM but she was vicious to the people socially etc. She even went as far as saying that there is no such thing as society.
