BASSETERRE, St Kitts & Nevis- Leading 3-1 in the 87th minute, the Virgin Islands seemed set to record their first win in the 2019/20 CONCACAF Nations League; however, three late goals by Bonaire snatched victory from the jaws of defeat at Warner Park Cricket Stadium in St Kitts and Nevis on Sunday, October 13, 2019.

The Virgin Islands had conceded first when Ayrton Cicilia scored for Bonaire from the penalty spot in the 25th minute. The score was even at half-time; however, thanks to Bailey Rowe who netted in the 45th minute.

Tyler Forbes then gave the VI a 2-1 lead in the 65th minute before Jerry Wiltshire added a third in the 84th minute.

Heart-breaking minutes

The Virgin Islands seemed to be staring victory in the face but the game proved to be far from over; however, as Bonaire bounced back with a plethora of goals at the death.

Rilova Janga first responded for Bonaire in the 88th minute before an own goal saw the scores levelled at 3-3 in added time.

A draw then seemed sure; however, Jurven Koffy found the match winner for Bonaire 5 minutes into added time to break VI hearts.

The VI had lost 2-4 to Bonaire on September 6, 2019 and will now be ruing their chances of making amends.

They will instead have to hope for better luck in their final group game, which will be against Bahamas on November 14, 2019.

The Bahamas won the first encounter with the VI 4-0 on October 10, 2019.

The CONCACAF Nations League is a new centralised men’s national team competition representing a new era of national team football for CONCACAF member associations.

Through this new centralised competition, all 41 CONCACAF member associations will keep the dream alive by participating in competitive international football year-round.
