ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A Global School Health Survey (GSHS) has shown obesity and overweight recording the highest percentages among students ages 13 through 15 in the Virgin Islands compared to other countries that participated in the survey.

The survey which was conducted since 2009 was sponsored by the Ministry of Health and Social Development and the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) among students, ages 13 to 15 years old, from forms 1 through 5. This represented some 1,664 students where the students self-reported their responses.

The results were presented today Friday November 18, 2011 at the University of the West Indies centre in Paraquita Bay, by PAHO’s Family and Community Health Advisor Dr. Betzabé Butrón where school counselors, teachers and public health officials were part of the meeting and participated in discussions of how best to address the situation.

Dr. Butrón stated that the Virgin Islands is experiencing a problem that is similar to other countries that were surveyed and it was more important to acknowledge that there is a huge problem and it was important to find solutions.

The results showed that in the Virgin Islands, it recorded the highest obesity rate among the age group of students, with boys recording 36 percent and girls 37.

In other countries that also took part in the survey, including St. Kitts and Nevis, Costa Rica, Jamaica and Guyana, the majority was between 20 and 30 percent.

As for the percentage of students who were obese, the Virgin Islands statistical figure stood the highest as well with both boys and girls at 17 percent. The majority of countries were between 5 and 10 percent.

The survey included questions on alcohol use, dietary behaviours, drug use, hygiene, mental health, physical activity, protective factors, sexual behaviours, tobacco and violence and unintentional injury. It is designed to, among other things, help countries develop priorities, establish programmes, and advocate for resources for school health and youth health programmes.

You are right. 1) Portion sizes are out of control and 2) there is no balance on the plate (i.e. too much starches).

Stop being ignorant and open your eyes. It is people like you why we cant do any better. When people try to give you information so that we can better ourselves we call them liars. Well for your information the survey is not a lie. The majority of our students are overweight. Deal with it and stop trying to bury your head in the sand.

Its that late night eating thats doing it...all that greasy food at those local ourlets like panchy, scattos, UP's. I think the government should bring in people to talk to the kids about how important it is to live an active healthy life style and to also encourage them to stay away from alcohol, smoking and other bad habits that can have a negative effect on their health. I see nothing wrong with educating the kids about what foods are beneficial to a proper diet.

Dear Truth, Government doesnt have to do everything. We dont need to bring anybody to tell you that eating fatty, sugary and salty foods is harmful. People need to do what they know is right! Stop buying food from Panchie and all the others who sell what is not wholesome and start preparing good healthy vegetable based meals at home. Encourage the children to go outside and play rather than sit in front of the TV, computer and video games all day. The problem is not a lack of knowledge but laziness.

Parents, start by making an effort and pack a healthy lunch rather than being lazy and giving the child $10 to go and buy 'whatever they want". I see so many of these children outside of the blue van, red van , sipping soda and eating fried food. This is not rocket science people. "you are what you eat'. this is just pure laziness!

This is why diabetes and cancer rates are so high in the BVI but it isn't rocket science. Make more time during school for real Physical Education. Start after-school programmes that require activity. Get the kids into hiking clubs. The Diabetes Association should offer an after-school programme for the overweight - get the kids moving and eating right.

We don't need more programs. There are enough programs available already. What we need is parents who will take up their responsibilities and raise healthy children!

This is a culture brought across from Africa where large women are desired by the wealthy men and tribal leaders. It is the Bold & Beautiful or rather Fat & Full of it culture that needs to be stamped out by fazing out these ridiculous pantomine events and that will funnel down to the school children. We don't want size 0s but we don't want to potray size 30+ as a good thing to be encouraged as it relates to the health of the children. I love curvy women but there is a limit to my bench press!

What utter nonsense! A study where students "self report" their weight. Do they even KNOW what their weight is? If these people wanted the truth they would have vistited the schools with a reliable scale. Throw this report in the garbage please.
    • Facts (20/11/2011, 15:35) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
For your information health workers visited all the schools with scales and measurement instruments and took the weight and measure of ALL students. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT. The BVI IS AN OBESE SOCIETY!!!

I was educated overseas and I have to say that I too believe this report. I have never seen so many overweight people in one place. It is the types of food we eat and the quantities served are ridiculous! When I see children eating a huge plate of rice with chicken, I want to slap their parents. How many children nowadays actually eat vegetables, fruit, yogurt, healthy (not sugar coated) cereals, etc.? All I ever see when out in public is children eating mountains of rice, chicken, pizza, pasta, french fries and basic crap! Heart Disease, diabetes and some cancers are all a direct result of what we eat. To those who don't believe it, just look around. There are so many FAT people (not just children) that it is frightening! We indulge ourselves and we indulge our children ~ at their expense! How many really old FAT people do you know? Obesity leads to an early grave. If that's what we want for ourselves and our children, we don't need to do a thing about our eating habits.

@ Liars: You say there are not more than 10 overweight people in the whole school. Now that is an absolute falsehood! You would be closer to the truth if you said that there are about 10 overweight kids in every class! The people who did this report have nothing against BVI kids. They are professionals doing their jobs and they conducted the survey professionally. The PAHO is no johnny-come lately. This is the kind of work they do all the time.
