ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - As hundreds of fans of American football gathered at locations across Tortola to watch Superbowl 48 unfold yesterday February 2, 2014, supporters of the Seattle Seahawks walked away elated at the drubbing that their team dished out to the odds-on favourite - the Denver Broncos, which sunk to a humiliating 43–8 defeat - to lift the hallowed Vince Lombardi trophy for the first time.

Sportscasters and analysts are calling it one of the worst defeats in Superbowl history, as the Seahawks held a rigid defensive strategy and forced the opposing Broncos to make uncharacteristic errors, solidifying their demise.

Those analysts, according to CNN, said that the fate of the game was sealed by halftime.

In the early stages of the game, Virgin Islands News Online visited the Save the Seed Energy Center, one of the locations set up for fans to watch the big game.

Bishop John I. Cline made it clear that he was a supporter of the Seahawks and was confident that they would come out victorious. “Well, we are here at the Save the Seed Center. We call it Super Soul Sunday instead of Superbowl Sunday, where we invite the men to come down and just be around food and drink and enjoy the game,” he said.

“I am a Seattle fan and I think it is going [well]. Payton Manning is a great quarterback and if he gets warmed up, [we] could be in trouble so we need to clear some distance,” he stated.

“We are enjoying the game. We are into it but some of the women don’t know what is going on but we are trying to teach them as we go,” he said.

Asked what were some of the strengths of the Seattle Seahawks, Bishop Cline said that defence is probably the hallmark of the team. “If you have to pit them against one another, defence would be the strongpoint of the Seattle Seahawks versus the offensive power of the Denver Broncos,” he said.

Bishop Cline acknowledged that the Seattle Seahawks were the underdogs and that is why he supported them in the Superbowl. “I am normally a [New York Giants] fan. The New York Giants is normally my team during the season. But during the Superbowl I just went for the underdog,” said Cline.

Another Seattle Seahawks fan was pleased with the performance of the team he backed though he had not quite written off the Denver Broncos just yet. “I am a Seahawks fan and they are off to a good start. But we have to be careful because we know that Denver is a second half team so the Seahawks need to rack up as many points as possible in the first half. So right now it is going our way,” said Dr Drexel M. Glasgow.

He pointed out that the Seattle Seahwaks is the best defensive team this season for the NFL. “Right now they are showing that they are the best defensive team because there have been interceptions and a lot of key stops so they need to just keep with their game plan and maintain that defence throughout the game,” said Glasgow.

One Denver Broncos fan at the Save the Seed Center was depressed at the dismal results her team had registered at that point the game – during the first half. “Well I am a little depressed because I am backing the Denver Broncos. Right now I am a little perturbed and disturbed,” said Ms Marietta C. Headley.

She said that throughout the season the performance of the Denver Broncos was “pretty good” but that she did not know what happened during Superbowl 48. “We are a comeback team so we don’t give up. I expect at least by halftime to have a score, even if it is a field goal,” said Headley.

At Captain Mulligan's Sports Bar there was a large crowd where both locals and foreigners watched every minute of the game on large screens set outdoors.

Patriots fan, Shaq Leonard said, “I don’t have a favourite team I’m just looking on. The game isn’t too sweet because it wasn’t close. If it was a closer game it would have been more competitive.”

Dashan Hodge aka Mouse said, “Manning is overrated to me. Just about every play is a good play because the defence is playing great football.”

Another fan who proudly displayed his Seahawks jersey said, “I’m supporting the [Seahawks], I want to thank the fans, all the haters… everybody that has something against Seattle that got us to this point. Enjoy this victory for everyone across the world. The twelfth man is here in the British Virgin Islands and we’re going to celebrate this one for a very long time.”

“Defence wins championships,” yelled Dashan Pickering, a 49ers turned Seahawks fan. “I’m rooting for Seattle, I go with the defensive team. Every year I go with the defensive team.”

Two young ladies who were enjoying the game simply for the atmosphere it provided said they would normally watch sports once they have the time. “I like the atmosphere, it’s open, breezy… something to do,” one commented.

After surveying the East End/Long Look community during the period of this year's annual Super Bowl it was obvious that most lovers of the sport had either opted to stay at home and view the game in the presence of their families or gather at the homes of peers.

This conclusion could not have been avoided as the regular crowd that flocked certain bars at this time of year was sparse and in some instances, especially at the first half of the game, was empty.

Heading down to LePetite Sports Lounge, this new site find a sizable group of persons converged in one place to enjoy the game. As the game got closer to the end, there was was not enough room to hold the patrons.

Among those spotted at LePetite were Representative for the Eight District Honourable Marlon A. Penn and Deputy Secretary in the Premier’s Office Brodrick Penn among others.
