BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI - Social Commentator and ZBVI 780 AM 'Honestly Speaking' radio host, Mr Claude O. Skelton-Cline says it is a culture of gossip and rumours in the Virgin Islands (VI) that sparked the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) as announced by Governor Augustus J.U. Jaspert before his departure.

“We have a culture of gossip in this country, a culture that we think is cute to just make up stories on each other, spread wild sick willful and wicked rumours on each other,” the clergyman alleged.

Politicians peddling rumours too – Skelton-Cline

Speaking during Thursday’s January 22, 2021, episode of his radio show, Skelton-Cline further remarked, that, “some elected officials have even gone in the House of Assembly with some of these unfounded pieces of information.”

While calling out VI politicians for spreading rumours, he further said they often use rhetoric that would sometimes paint each other as corrupt and peddle more untruths.

He said it is the same culture in the VI that sparked the CoI in the first place. “We sit in bars, we sit on the well, we sit at the taxi stands, we sit under the tree, we playing dominoes and we talk a wack of stuff that has no basis in fact, much less truth,” he said.

Meanwhile, having announced the Commission of Inquiry on January 18, 2021, Governor Jaspert in a January 22, 2021, Press conference said the CoI was necessary based on the great number of concerns and unfounded allegations received by him from the VI community, public service, the media and businesses.

Allegations came from ‘community’ – Gov Jaspert

According to Skelton-Cline, “here it is now the UK is taking all these rumours, all these unfounded innuendos, all this gossip, that's a part of our culture… here they are now for their purposes taking that stuff and using it,” he said.

He alleged that the Governor is not acting on their own, rather, on behalf of a United Kingdom Government with ulterior motives.

Skelton-Cline reminded that the CoI announcement has no specifics or particulars outlined in the document but is rather an ambiguous document tantamount to a fishing exhibition and witch hunt sparked by very gossip and rumours perpetrated by Virgin Islanders.

NO! It's people like you SC that cause for the stipulation of COI. Always speaking out if turn and context, instead of addressing what you are being paid to do.

I agree with Mr. Clyne that the BVI has a problem when it comes to gossip. Gossip can destroy people character and even life. Some people thrive on gossip so much so their lives seemingly depends on it. Personally that’s why I shut people down whenever they come to me with gossip. That said, we cannot simply sit back and allow corruption to take root in our society. If there are elements let it be exposed and those who are guilty be given their just deserves. Exposing the wrongdoers will make it less likely to reoccur. I for one will like to know how the 40 million dollars grant from Social Security was spent, every dime. After all, it belongs to the people who contribute to social security.

BVI people let's get serious. We have for too long been on the kitchen counters we have been placed on the back burners so long now off the stove all together.
People are now calling on us to listen to them all of a sudden. Only them have solutions.
It reminds me of the time just before elections.
Let's get serious. Who needs who now? How come you have time for everybody all of a sudden? Why is it necessary to come looking and running us down now?. We were non existent until you foresee a bit of obstacles show up on your charts, but now you need a crew because your cargo needs to be shifted. Captain this Boat has Owners. Let's just hear what they have to say, then decide if we going stay on board or abandon ship or perish slow, before you jump up and say which way we should go. You never asked us , you are telling us where you want us to go..BVI Love should be all time.

It does not make any sense playing the blame game at this late stage. What has been done is already a given, and no doubt the rumours served their purpose and brought to light what may have been done in the darkness.

no sir..you are wrong mr. clyne. this was called for during the election campaign by our current government. they wanted investigstions...which have not been concluded...even now. ! so we should all be happy the the government is living up to its political campaign pro.ise to get these investigations done...at no expense to the BVI...by an indipendant inquiry which cannot come back on the government as being bias or controvertial.
so pkease stop stiring the pot..let justice be done...justice be served. ....please.
