VI Athletes need support system – Hon. Walwyn
Hon. Walwyn made these statements while addressing the House of Assembly at their first sitting of the second session, on September 3, 2012.
As a resut to his trip that cost over $6000 to attend this year’s Olympics in London, the Minister stated “When you go to the Olympics, you feel jealous… its not to say you are not proud of your own.” In relation to other Caribbean countries, their athletes and their performance, he added “What they have Madam Speaker, it’s not that they have more talent than we have, that’s not the case at all; they have the support systems in place to help their athletes achieve greatness.”
Hon. Walwyn went on to say that that is what the Virgin Islands needs to do.
“When I came back from the Olympics, I told Mr. Harrigan to go down to Jamaica and find out what they doing down there, because what they doing down there, we need to start doing here.”
The Minister continued by saying, that all the focus shouldn’t be on athletics alone, “we have other talented people in this country, in the arts, music and different things, and we ought to try our best to hone the skills of all our people not juts athletics.”
Hon. Walwyn stated that the Virgin Islands had athletes who were excellent in almost every sport the VI had to offer, but it didn’t get any further. “We have got to take it more serious.”
“There is a need for us to do more to build our local talents…In almost any sport you can think about, we had people here who were excellent at it, but they didn’t get any further than the island.”
