ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Through music, poems and dramatization, a host of talented Virgin Islands’ artistes unleashed a strong battle against drug addiction at the 17th Annual Artistes Against Addiction concert held yesterday Sunday January 29, 2012.

Taking the stage at Breezeway at the Central Administrative Complex, there was no limit to talent as artistes after artistes displayed their versatility in their respective artforms using their talents to highlight the ills of drug addictions and also sending out strong awareness messages for prevention and awareness.

Calpysonian Mighty KP, through song, encouraged the public to stay away from drugs which will not only destroy them and their families but also the entire society.

Saxophonist Kamau Georges ignited the “happy feeling” into the audience, urging them to be happy for no reason. He belted out an up-tempo session on the sax, rendering Rihanna’s “We found love” and Stevie Wonder’s “Do I Do” that had the audience rocking.

Jeremy Vanterpool rendered “What we need is love” on the sax while the Methodist Church Group did a dance.

The Police Band were a refreshing welcome to the event as the singers included guest Police Commissioner Reynell Frazer who along with his other colleagues rendered, “Lean On Me”.

Poems were also rendered speaking of the atrocities associated with drug addiction while several prizes were awarded for those who correctly answered questions on drug addiction.

Other performers also include Dephaniah Callwood, Monique Chapdelaine, Blue Essence Band, Rosie Smith, Garth Hewlett and Friends, the Elmore Stoutt High School Band, Acapella Fellas and Linette Rabsatt and Son.

The concert was held by the Sandy Lane Centre in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Development and was one of the activities of the Centre’s annual Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Awareness Month (SAPTAM)

It was held under the theme: “Don’t give up! Don’t give in; with Hope substance abuse cannot win”.

Manager of the Sandy Lane Centre Andrea Hamm thanked all the artistes for participating in the event to make it a success.

“The response was overwhelming and artistes were calling and wanted to contribute, they come out year after year,” she told Virgin Islands News Online as the event came to an end.

She also thanked the 15 businesses who made donations and contributions towards the concert.

The Sandy Lane Centre was established under the Ministry of Health and Social Development in 1995 to provide treatment and related services to persons who suffer from addictions to alcohol and other substances; to lend support to the families of persons who suffer from addiction; and to provide education and increased awareness on addiction and treatment.
