ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Shareholder of VI Airlink, Neville C. Brathwaite Jr. believes that while he would like to see the territory get its own flag carrier, he said it doesn't necessarily have to be VI Airlink.

“But I would like to see a carrier out of the BVI doing direct service to the mainland United States and then connecting the rest of the Caribbean and it doesn't have to be an extensive route structure but it would connect all of the dots for the [VI],” he said.

Brathwaite Jr, who hails from a family of aviators, was a guest last evening February 23, 2016, on the 'Speak Out BVI' radio show with host Doug Wheatley and a second guest Natalio D. Wheatley aka Sowande Uhuru.

The programme was aired on ZBVI 780 AM between the hours of 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm.

Natalio D. Wheatley said he believes VI Airlink is in the best position right now to be the territory's flag carrier. “VI Airlink is the local carrier which is in the best position to do that right now. I mean, that's the situation right now when we talk about local carriers,” said Wheatley.

The elephant in the room - BVI Airways

All of the guests and the host of the show stayed away from the subject of Government subsidies to BVI Airways, about which many persons have been critical at a time when performers, contractors and other service providers cannot be paid for their work.

Persons have expressed that if any assistance was to be made available, it should have gone to a locally owned operation like VI Airlink. We had reached out to VI Airlink for a comment regarding Government subsidy but our attempts were futile.

It was this news site that first and accurately broke the news on January 11, 2016 that the formerly defunct BVI Airways, which was operating at Beef Island Airport around 2010 and had closed its doors in 2014 because it was reported to have run out of money, was back, this time under new owners and with a bailout or subsidy package from the Government of $7M.

While this is not the first time there have been direct flights between Miami and the Virgin Islands, Premier Smith claims that the driving force behind the Government's investment of $7M was to help with airlift, even though there seems to be no guarantee of passenger numbers.

BVI Airways is to commence direct service from Miami International Airport to Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island later this year.

some of these talk show host should not be speaking on the behalf of the territory: it takes far more than stimulating conversation to operate a national airline..... Here is my personal concern; for close to 20 years the territory had no designated national air carrier and the territory heard nothing from wheatley on the issue but as soon as BVI Airways came on stream he begins to make a sheet of noise..... Some people in the territory can only come up with a conversation after someone else brings an idea to the table.... BVI has no National Air Carrier for many years and we heard nothing from wheatley about making VI Air Link the national Carrier back then BUT here he is now taking blues.....just saying

@ don't lie: thanks for the correction; I want more of the young people in the territory to be more proactive, be trend setters because the VI I grew up in back in the 60s is quickly slipping away....

How are they in the best position Sowande? Could you please expand on it? Are they financially viable? Can they get the necessary approvals etc. in order to fly direct to Miami? Will $7 mil be enough for them to be able to source aircraft, staffing at all points, maintenance etc. or does Government need to give them $50 mil? Don't just make statements, you need to elaborate and put facts out there. Airlift shouldn't be an emotional or patriotic issue only, there are financial and other implications involved and those should be addressed as well. I would love to see VI Airlink as the flag carrier and doing direct flights but let's get to the crux of the matter, what will it take for them to get there? Airlift is no joke and we need to realize that before spouting off.

vi airlink has approvals to fly into miami, a plane, and all the proper certification. bvi airways on the other hand, did not even have an airplane at the time of government's investment and also lacked the proper certification. Before you accuse Sowande of not knowing the facts, perhaps you should appraise yourself of the facts. I am sure you did not even listen to the radio programme where this quote was extracted from.

If they have all that in place why are they not flying to Miami then?

Nuh mind them. The only explanation that peple like you have is that mindset are comfortable with is 1) red yeye, 2) badmind or 3) hurt feelings. Emotional intelligence is pretty low.

Any airline needs to partner on government on a major operation such as that. American Airlines, Seabourne, anybody. They can fly there charter but daily flights are a different story. Why are locals not worthy of the same investment?

yes it ok to say that but come down to reality do they have a big jet a bigger plane to carry or go the distance who goin fly on dem prop plane from Miami to here, they are good pilot no doubt but they need to invest in getting bigger planes and start flying in the caribbean first give liat competition first. how long we crying about liat an no one step up to the plate.

No one can compete with Liat if they continue to get 80-100 million every few years. Boeing 737 700
      Boeing 737 700
      Price- 74.80 Million USD
      Light Passenger Jets
      Embraer 170
      Embraer 170
      Price- 26.50 Million USD
      Mid Size Passenger Jets
      Airbus A318
      Airbus A318
      Price- 70.10 Million USD
when you ready to buy, "dem boy ready to fly". bring your money and not your mouth. They could get trained to fly them in a few weeks.
That don't include the maintenance that have to be done, and parts that have to change if the plane don't even fly. bring the money for that too.
The other airline that don't exist get 7 million USD, well 500K so far according to the MOU to startup again. Hmmm
