VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI – When the recently elected president of the BVI Cancer Society Ms Gloria Fahie and re-elected Public Relations Officer Stacy C. Lloyd were invited to facilitate at a youth forum at Virgin Gorda recently, they never expected that the youths would have been spurred into action as quickly as they did.

Yesterday November 24, 2013 Ms Fahie and Ms Lloyd were invited at the St Ursula’ Roman Catholic Church to accept a cheque valued $800 from the Catholic Youth Envisionairs and their moderators.

The group, which has Ms Deborah Bruce as its lead moderator, had staged a cake sale for the sole purpose of raising monies to be donated towards the continued work of the BVI Cancer Society. Ms Fahie was present at the church yesterday to receive the donation formally.

President of the Youth Group Ms Keri Octave said, “We heard the Cancer Society’s plea for help therefore we held a baked cake sale in honour of the society and was able to raise $800. Ms Fahie you are truly a gem, your warm and friendly disposition reminds us that cancer is not a death sentence, it can be fought,” said the young president.

It was an emotional moment for other members of the church present as they all applauded the youth group for their efforts and rose to show their support for the BVI Cancer Society.

In accepting the cheque, Ms Fahie expressed her surprise at the amount the youths were able to raise at an event of the nature of a cake sale and the short time they took to organize and execute the fund raiser.

She spoke highly of the strong family spirit that exists among the people of Virgin Gorda and appealed for their continued prayers and support for the Cancer Society and those living with and affected by the disease.

Yesterday also saw another significant step towards the cause of cancer at Virgin Gorda. Several women came together and decided that they were willing to get an arm of the Cancer Society up and running again on the sister island.

The women endeavour to get a wider cross-section of persons involved as they work towards ensuring that much more is done to support the cause.
