ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - On Wednesday night, March 19, 2014, at the A.O. Shirley Ground in Road Town, came ample proof why Football is often referred to as ‘the greatest game on Earth’ when division one side, VG Utd. completed a come from behind 2-1 victory over Premier division high flyers, the Sugar Boyz.

Showing a greater resolve and greater desire to succeed VG Utd. withstood everything the Sugar Boyz could throw at them and with Troy Williams putting in a commanding if not calming defensive performance they took the game by the scruff of the neck late in the second half to first equalize through Thomas Albert and then to seal the win via the head of Jumaane Morton.

The Sugar Boyz had probably deserved their first half lead, when after several wasted chances they got a lucky break towards end of the first period.

Akeem Hendrikson saw his shot from the right deflected by Benjamin Camille into the path of Derol Redhead, who had the simplest of tap ins at the far post.

Jiuenick Mingo had a chance to double the lead early in the second period, but Camille made a fine block; a foul by the hard tackling Williams led to Terrence Nanton firing the free kick over the bar, Redhead also saw a shot fly high and then, following a Jario Morris header Mingo failed to a firm touch from 6 yards out and saw what seemed a certain goal, cleared away.

At the other end Albert saw a curling effort go narrowly wide with the keeper beaten, Andres Bailey missed a couple of golden opportunities and brought out a fine diving save from Stephen Dandrade.

Then came the drama.

With Alfred Reid seemingly suffering from a clash of heads and some players calling for the ball to put out of play Camille pumped a long ball down field into the path of Albert, who with a deft touch sped past a static Sugar Boyz defense and calmly slid the ball home past the advancing Dandrade.

More drama and the coup de grace on a famous cup giant killing act came 5 minutes later when Morton rose unchallenged with a perfect header from Albert’s corner in the last minute of the game.

Football focus shifts back to the Premier Division on Sunday, also at the A.O. Shirley Ground when the Rebels F.C. attempt to get their first points of the season when the play the Islanders at 5.00pm. Then at 7.00pm One Love, the league leaders, takes on the Sugar Boyz.
