ROAD REEF, Tortola, VI – Post time - 10:05AM A daring robbery occurred this morning, October 13, 2013 at the RiteWay convenience store located at Road Reef Plaza where an undisclosed sum of money, along with other valuables, was stolen.

According to Retail Manager of RiteWay Food Markets, Mr Andy Clayton, the robbery occurred just around 9 A.M. in the parking lot of the supermarket while the driver was sitting in one of the company’s vehicles.

“[He] was approached by what seems to be a masked man who tried to take control of the vehicle,” Clayton related.

The man eventually succeeded in taking the vehicle along with a quantity of cash. Clayton declined to give an estimate of the cash stolen at this point.

The Retail Manager related that although some force was used to commandeer the vehicle, there were no reports of a weapon being involved in the incident.

He further told this news site that one of the employees, who was nearby, jumped in his vehicle and gave chase but lost sight of the vehicle shortly afterwards as it headed towards Road Town.

The driver is reportedly very traumatised by the incident which was allegedly reported immediately afterwards to the Road Town Police Station. Several witnesses reportedly saw the incident as it unfolded.

Police Information Officer Diane Drayton confirmed a report of the robbery and stated that details will be given at a later time.

Virgin Islands News Online will continue to provide more details as this story develops.

@Suzie, if you think the criminal should have done something to the manager, then I think the same should befall you.

I am wondering if the bloggers are going to justify these criminal activities with the foolish argument of “the government not giving them jobs”

Nuff said! This story makes no sense. Mask man, 9am, happens to know that the driver has money, has no gun, takes over the vehicle, another gives chase and loses sight of the vehicle? Lose sight in BVI? What was he chasing on a scooter? BS!!!

If he was on a scooter, for sure he would not have lost sight of the vehicle.

It is not the government responsibility to "give" anyone a job...no matter who is in power. A job is something you earn. Too many people want a job, but they don't want to WORK. As far a crime goes, the BVI has gotten out of control. It cannot be stopped under current circumstances. How does it stop, who knows. Maybe the Police and guard service need guns.

It's unlikely, from what I've seen with the crime wave, that the last 2 years of the NDP and RVIPF under Morris will be quickly fixed..expect more of the same!!!

Who knew that a driver would be arriving at Road Reef with cash at 9:00 on a Sunday Morning? Is it that the other driver just happened to see? or was he on standby for the chase. Do the math, Do the math

why one of the security was not assigned to go with the driver, instead of standing in the store intimidating customers ? the R M is not too smart , over looking this option?

Please note that according to the report, the thief drove off in the vehicle belonging to the employee, hence no need to take down the vehicle no - it wasn't said however, if the vehicle the employee was sitting in belonged to him or to RTW. If it was a set up (since the circumstances sound questionable), I trust that the police will get to the bottom of it, even if they have to import someone trained in assessing the methodology of criminals as well as profiling. Likewise, if the circumstances are genuine, let it be fool-proof. The use of lie-detectors have proven to be very reliable.
