ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Word just reaching this news site from our team of reporters around the Virgin Islands is that Mrs. Vanessa Garraway, a long time teacher and Head of the Mathematics Department at the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS), has been named acting Deputy Principal of the school.

This is after Deputy Principal Mrs. Connie George was transferred to the Department of Education to streamline the activities for the accreditation process- an initiative started by former Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Andrew A. Fahie.

The current Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron V. Walwyn has continued the goal of accreditation and confirmed, in an answer to a question from Hon. Fahie at a recent sitting of the House of Assembly, that Mrs. George would assist with that process.

Mrs. Garraway, a Virgin Islander, started her teaching career at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School. Her specialty is Mathematics. She also holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of the Virgin Islands.

The announcement of her appointment to the post of Acting Deputy Principal was made late last week at the school following a staff meeting, according to this news site’s many sources within the Education Department.

With the sick leave of current Acting Principal Wade W. Tobin, a story firstly and accurately reported by this news site, Mrs. Garraway is in charge of the school.

The Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) is the largest secondary school in the Virgin Islands.

The days of next in line are long gone. If your are eligible and the correct processes are followed then so it will be. Because of the formative traditions about next in line, people lazily sit on their hinds and await what they think is their rightful inheitance....NONSENSE. CONGRATS Mrs. Garraway and may GOD continue to bless you.

agreed! Van don't mess with not one soul and her husband has absolutely nothing to do with her promotion (culturally speaking) These people need to stop, and half of them will see and and say hi like nobody's business, this place dangerous, but anyway, it really doesn't matter, cause what's done is done!

Congratulations to Vanessa. Here we go again, putting persons in places where they are not certified. Vanessa is an excellent math teacher. When we continue to break down the foundation who is we going to get to build it up. like a post stated was this position advertised or they are just handed down to friends. The education system is moving towards certification but then their leaders are not certified in the areas placed in. How many of the principals and assistant principals have training in administration and supervision? How many teachers are certified in the area they teach in. All these are factors leading up to certification.

Vanessa has been running eshs ever since Ms. Scatliffe left, dont be fooled by those that had big positions they dont know squat!!! The past minister continued to walk over her to put in his cronies and ran the school down, God bless vanessa didnt throw in the towel and still showed good faith. Mr. Tobin needs a strong person to have his back and Vanessa is that person. She has always been there helping out during vacation while those with positions are on vacation. God Bless you Vanessa, I know the staff has prayed hard and welcomed this news.....

Vanessa is a good teacher, with no administrative skills or training. That is the problem, we can neither create a culture of excellence or move from good to great with individuals who lack basic administrative skills in education. Currently non of the three able bodied principals have any training in education administration and no one is there to guide them. Is this excellence? WOW.

Isn't on the job training just as important. She has been an administrator as a Year Head and a Department Head responsible for dealing with situations with students, teachers and parents. She is more fitting than any of the other Asst Principals for the position. She should have be given the opportunity to serve in this position long time. It is time she be paid for all the ADMINISTRATIVE hard work that she has provided over the years.

I agree with insider 100%, I've been there and insider's comment is on point! Justice need to shut the heck up, Vanessa can do/does 90% of operations from that school, regardless of the subject. Why advertise posts like these? Who suppose to really fill them? It makes perfect sense to get veterans from inside the school system, who can deal with different issues, cause half of ya'll lazy behinds won't think of going the high school to work. Negative people make me sick, if you have nothing positive to say on here, stay home on your verandah and discuss.

Dear Vanessa: Your hard, unheralded work has paid off! Congratulations! You've been working in the education vineyard at the ESHS for years, helping (understudying) the masters, (mistresses) Germaine and Jillian to keep the school ship afloat. You've worked diligently, uncomplainingly and without fanfare. God has rewarded you. And He will see you through, because He does not call the equipped; He equips those whom He has called. When He had called you, you had responded loudly, enthusiastically and willingly. So now He has seen it fit to promote you. Promotion comes from Him and Him alone. Who Jah bless, no man curse! Go girl, let your light so shine! CRG

Sounds like a good move to me. She has always seemed to have good rapport with the students at the Math dept. I'm sure she can translate it to the rest of the school.
