FREDERIKSTED, St Croix, USVI — United States Attorney Gretchen C.F. Shappert for the District of the [US] Virgin Islands announced today, September 20, 2019, the unsealing of an indictment charging [US] Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) Officer Yomont King with a variety of offenses, including bank fraud, aggravated identity theft, and forgery.

Mr King made his initial appearance in federal court today in St Croix.

According to the indictment, Mr King defrauded one bank by depositing a $10,990 loan check intended for a third party into his own personal bank account on multiple occasions. In another instance, according to the charging document, Mr King forged checks totaling $2,800 and deposited them into his own personal bank account.

The case is being investigated by the FBI and the Virgin Islands Police Department Economic Crimes Unit. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Nathan Brooks.

Attorney Shappert said an indictment is merely a formal charging document, and it is not evidence of guilt. Every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
