CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St Thomas, USVI - The South Carolina men’s basketball team grinded out a win in the opener of the 2015-16 season last Saturday night, November 14, 2015, taking an 84-69 win over Norfolk State in the first game of the US Virgin Islands Paradise Jam tournament.

The tournament continues for South Carolina in the Virgin Islands today Friday November, 20 against DePaul.

Four players recorded double figure scores for the Garnet and Black, with Sindarius Thornwell and Duane Notice leading the way with 14 points apiece.

Apart from South Carolina, organisers of the 2015 US Virgin Islands Paradise Jam have announced that the men’s bracket also contains eight NCAA division one men’s basketball teams participating in the 16th annual event, including DePaul, Florida State, Indiana State, Hofstra, Norfolk State, Ohio, South Carolina, and Tulsa.

The men’s tournament takes place annually the week before Thanksgiving and this year it is being held on November 20-23 at the University of the Virgin Islands in St Thomas, USVI.

This year’s tournament features two alumni teams. Norfolk State makes its third trip back to the Virgin Islands. The Spartans fell just short of a Championship in 2011, falling to Marquette in the Championship and placed 6th in the 2005 event. DePaul makes its second trip back to Paradise, placing 3rd back in 2009.

The eight NCAA division one women’s basketball teams participating in the 16th annual event include Maryland, Old Dominion, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, South Dakota State, Tulane, Virginia, and UW- Green Bay. Old Dominion and Rutgers both return to the Virgin Islands for the fourth time.

The women’s tournament is held annually on the week of Thanksgiving with the 2015 dates being November 26-28 at the University of the Virgin Islands.

Paradise Jam has become one of the premier pre-season destination tournaments for men’s basketball. It is a multiple team event (MTE) tournament, counting only two of the three games against participants’ 29 allotted games. Hosted at the $11 million state-of-the-art UVI Sports and Fitness Center, Paradise Jam attracts thousands of tourists to the US Virgin Islands each year while immersing participating fans and teams in the culture and travel experience that has made the US Virgin Islands one of the premier destinations in the Caribbean.

Established in 1985, Basketball Travelers Inc is the leading firm in the United States for organising domestic and international basketball competition. Over 200 collegiate and high school teams participate annually in tours and tournaments run by BTI.

We can host it because NDP government had the foresight to build a state if the art gym. Let VIP take that.

It was andrew fahie, jamsie and the VIP who built that......Myron and the NDP built a barn for a gym in VG.

I was at the game on Saturday night and I was totally disappointed! They put together some run down team to represent the BVI! Come on man, we could have found better players! Put together a decent outfit! Actually looking like a team! To be seen on a regional and international arena like that, I was totally disappointed! Compared to the UVI team, we were chumps! All this money we pumping into sports, WHAT A WASTE!
