USVI man charged with Vehicular Homicide

…after accident leaves one dead

LONG BAY, St. Thomas, USVI - An accident in the wee hours of Monday morning, April 22, 2019, left one man dead and others injured in St. Thomas, a release issued by USVIPD Public Information Officer, Glen Dratte confirmed.

The USVIPD release stated that on Monday at about 1:41 am, their Traffic Division officers were dispatched to an auto collision incident in Long Bay, just passed the former pump station where road construction is ongoing. 

According to the release, a female driver and male passenger were travelling west in a red Nissan sedan, while another vehicle—a silver Toyota Yaris—was travelling east.

One Passenger Dead

The Yaris collided into the red Nissan, which led to the death of one of the passengers travelling in the Yaris, according to police.

The occupants of both vehicles were treated for their injuries at the Schneider Regional Medical Center (S.R.M.C.) and later discharged.

Meanwhile, the deceased was identified by next of kin as 21-year-old Gilberto Yinior Baez Salas and police have since charged the driver of the Yaris, identified as 29-year-old Bienvenido Gomez Morales, with negligent driving, failing to stay as far left as practical, and vehicular homicide. He was arrested at 7:00 a.m. Monday

Unable to make bail of $25,000, Mr Morales was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advisement hearing.
