ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The woman accused of stabbing the father of her child in the abdomen recently has been released on bail after being charged with the offence of wounding with intent.

Irene Mars, 21, of Purcell Estate was placed on $30,000 station bail after being charged on April 2, 2014 for stabbing her ex-boyfriend, Romano Peters a few days earlier.

Virgin Islands News Online understands that the stabbing incident stemmed from a domestic quarrel the two had over their young child.

Peters, 26, was allegedly stabbed after dealing the woman several blows in the presence of another person. His current condition is unknown after emergency surgery performed following the incident.

Mars is now scheduled to appear before the Magistrate’s Court on May 16, 2014 to answer charges in the matter.

From the look of things, it seems that women are now getting the upper hand and not allowing their abusive spouse to hit them and get away with it anymore. I applaud you. Reporting them to the police might just be a slap on the wrist for them because they will come back and hit you again. Ladies, those of you who are strong enough to defend yourselves from these constant abusers, I will encourage you to do so. Don’t kill them, the first pot you hit them in their head with they will know not to lift their hand at you again. But if you stay and take the beating they will continue to hit you again and again and get away with it. Ladies stop allowing yourselves to become victims to men it is time to stand up and END IT NOW.

I would never condone using a knife unless the woman feared for her life and was in a position only to defend herself. The law would agree and a woman would go to jail just the same as any man. I do agree that women need not be victims of abuse. I wish women took more pride in themselves and loved themselves enough not to get involved with a man who either physically or emotionally abused her. The first sign of abuse and a woman should be proud enough to realize there is no love in those actions but for the abusers selfish love of himself (or herself). Walk away ladies. If you have to run then run. But never look back even if weepy apologies and empty promises come. Thank God for allowing you the foresight into your husband or boyfriend's true nature. Get the heck out! You and/or your children are far better off. And never stay because of money. Why would you sell yourself as a punching bag in exchange for anything? Ask friends or family or support networks to assist you in being trained to earn your own money. You are stronger than you think. Be all you were created for. And always remember a man does not define you, it is only you that defines yourself. There are men out there who will be your equal partner, who will never think of striking you or humiliating you or belittling you. You just need to see within you the woman God gave you the potential to be. In her you will find the love and the strength that will be the defence against the weak abusive man. You will never find yourself needing to pull a knife in defence because you would already have walked away.

should she be locked up for defending herself????? Give the law time to sort it out first before they throw a her in jail. Doesn't she have a kid to care for?? He was supposed to walk away from the argument they had not hit her.... Now he is paying for attacking a woman. I hope he lives and she doesn't go to jail for defending herself. I mean what kind of law is it to say we should not defend ourselves!!

So sad that it had to come to this. If a man and a woman can't come to terms they need to call the relationship quits. No need for the violence on either side. @ Lawd I agree because with one parent taking jail and the other fighting for life it's only the child who will suffer.

Men are so much bigger/stronger than women. If a man hits a woman, I hope she defends herself! He is just unlucky that what she was able to grab for her self defense happened to be something that could stab. Self defense is not attempted murder! Self defense is not intent to wound! It is self defense!!!!!!!!!
  • Experience (03/04/2014, 14:25) Like (3) Dislike (1) Reply
The laws of the bvi do not recognize self defense, they will punish her and spit in her face and tell her to not take the law into her own hands by defending herself, battered women need some serious protection against the abusers and the law who do not defend them. The jurors these days are not paying attention to detail in the trials, they come with their minds made up to throw people in prison . We need a fair system in the bvi.

This is so sad. Now i dont know the details of their relationship but what if he had DIED. Everybody like they glad to hear that woman stabbing man now. Because if it was the man who did the stabbing they would of crucify him looong time. Double standards. If this was self defense i hope it can be proven. If it was premeditated i hope she goes to jail. As for the victim if he did anything to provoke this situation i hope this would be a lesson to remember.

Dear everyone taking Irene's side. Here are some questions you should ponder. Is there one shred of evidence to show that he ever hit her? No! Is there a police report that shows that there was a police report filed by her No! and guess what you all? The only record filed at the police station was when Romarno called them when she stabbed him in the foot because he ignored her thus causing them to break up. Finally, do any of you really know what really happened? Here is what you guys should really think about. If you are a mother or grandmother would you be present and watch an over 6 feet tall young man beating on your grand-daughter and not take up your phone and call the police? Even after he was stabbed in your presence wouldn't you call the police and report something? Hmm, She was taken to the hospital to be examined that same night there was not a shred of evidence that she was as you guys are saying here beaten up. Now please let justice run it's course and leave this alone.

I agree with @really i read most of these comments and these ppl really don't know what's going on. They are just talking because the heard a women stab man because he hit her and jump to the conclusion that it's self defense just because it's a women. What if a man stab a women because she was beating up on him then this story would of been a lot different. The women would of been right SMH
