Best of the best for ‘Strike out illiteracy' bowling finals tonight

DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI - Tonight, Friday December 12, 2014 at the Save the Seed Energy Centre, Write to Read will be hosting its “Strike Out Illiteracy – No Time to Spare” Bowling Tournament Finals. The top two teams from the tournaments in September, October and November have advanced and will now face each other in the finals tonight to determine the “Champion of Champions.”

The finalists are Infinite Solutions, National Bank of the Virgin Islands, Virgin Islands Civil Service Association, BVI Ports Authority, BVI Health Services Authority and Sable Trust.

Other participants who competed in the tournament include BVI Tourist Board, Harneys, Appleby, BVI Electricity Corporation, Eureka, Virgin Islands Civil Service Association (Team 2) and YOUnIty.

“I would like to take this opportunity to extend a heartfelt thank you to the companies and organizations mentioned for their commitment to help champion the cause of literacy. I would also like to say a special thank you to the Premier, Dr the Honourable Orlando Smith for his contribution and dedication to this cause. The resounded support received by all is truly appreciated,” said Ms Sharie B. de Castro, creator of Write to Read in a comment to this news site.

The event has seen management in the Virgin Islands at its highest level going head to head with each other. Tonight, team work, camaraderie and positive competitive energy will be visible as teams bowl off to decide who will be the 2014 champion.

At tonight’s event there will also be a Books Mean More Christmas Reading Campaign Book Sale. The aim of this Christmas Reading Campaign is to challenge parents to buy at least one book for each child to put underneath the Christmas tree. This initiative was launched by Write to Read last week Friday night December 5, 2014 at Christmas on de Castro Street and Ms. de Castro noted that it was a tremendous success.

Ms. de Castro explained, “The Books Mean More Christmas Reading Campaign has been an invigorating experience thus far. The community has come out in huge numbers to support this initiative. On the first day most of the books were finished as over 200 books were sold. By the end of the event close to 300 books were sold in total. It is awesome to see parents and children get so excited about books.”

Persons who were unable to get their children’s books last weekend have another opportunity to do so tonight at the Bowling Tournament.

Ms de Castro, one of the Territory’s newest young entrepreneurs, also noted that there will be on-site registration for the 2015 Write to Read programme at tonight’s event where limited spots are available. She can be contacted via email at writetoreadbvi@gmail.com or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/writetoreadbvi for more information.

“Now that the first term of school has come to an end and reports have and continue to be collected, this is a prime time to reflect on your child’s grades and if necessary make a decision to help improve your child’s academic experience and life in general by enrolling them in the Write to Read Programme. Every child should have the Right to Read and Write, they get that chance at Write to Read,” said Ms. de Castro.

At Write to Read Instruction is delivered in the components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension, as well as the components of writing: content, organization, presentation, voice, word choice, sentence fluency and conventions which include spelling, grammar and usage, paragraphing, use of capitals and punctuation.

This program targets both the child whose weakness is reading and writing and the child whose strength is English and wants to further develop their skills and master language and literature. There is a great focus on creative writing to include poetry, short stories and plays.

Persons are invited to come out tonight in support of Write to Read’s mission to strike out illiteracy and make reading a national priority in the Virgin Islands.
