PHILIPSBURG, St Maarten, WI- The greatest collection of basketball talent in the Eastern Caribbean converged in Philipsburg, Dutch St Maarten from July 16, 2017 to July 22, 2017 in the fourth annual Battle of the Fittest Basketball Tournament.

The popular event, held at the L. B. Scott Sports Auditorium, saw teams from the Virgin Islands (VI), who were the 2016 defending champions, Dominica, Aruba, Dominican Republic, St Kitts-Nevis, Holland, and both Dutch and French St Maarten/St Martin.

The Virgin Islands did a clean sweep, winning every game they played en route to the championship game played last evening July 22, 2017 against the St Kitts’ big all-star team for a cash prize of US $5000.00 (five thousand dollars) winner takes all.

VI had some of the best basketball talents

But with the VI basketball powerhouses, including Ray D. Victor, Killven M. Samuel, and St Thomas’ Khalid S. Gerrard, it was a blow out.

The VI team, named ‘Willful Skillful BVI’, led 52-23 at half time.

When the 4th quarter ended the score was VI-108 to St Kitts- 80, a crushing defeat for the St Kitts team.

The VI boys were led by Coach Ronald ‘Gola’ Simmonds with Assistant Coach Trevor ‘West’ Stevens. The Manager was Don ‘Dongo’ Farrel.

For the VI Team, Mr Samuel aka ‘Kelo’ led with most points and was named the Championship Team MVP. He also picked up the Battle of the Fittest Basketball Tournament’s overall defensive player.

Team VI also included other basketball talents such as Juan R. Hatchet, Kimani T. Stevens, Clayon M. Reese, MacKebo R. Fahie, Jason J. Hodge, Raquan K. S. Fahie, Shemar George, and Cedric D. King.

Tortola vs St Kitts in Battle of the Fittest Tournament- St Maarten

The Virgin Islands (Tortola) is represented in the Battle of the Fittest Basketball Tournament in Dutch St Maarten, with some eleven players and they have won all games played so far.

The VI team, named 'Willful Skillful', will face St Kitts in the final championship game this evening Saturday July 22, 2017 at 9:00 PM at the LB Scout Auditorium in St Maarten and the winner takes all.

The team is being led by Coach Ronald 'Gola' Simmonds and the winner will walk away with a cash prize of US$5000.00.

Big local basketball names

The team includes big Virgin Islands (VI) basketball names from both Tortola and Virgin Gorda, such as Ray D. Victor, Killven M. Samuel, Juan R. Hatchet, Kimani T. Stevens and Khalid Gerrard.

Other members on the VI squad are Clayon M. Reese, MacKebo R. Fahie, Jason J. Hodge, Raquan K. S. Fahie, Shemar George, and Cedric D. King.
