ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Disgruntled vendors, who operate on race days at Ellis Thomas Downs in Sea Cows Bay, will have to hold a little while longer for their concerns to be addressed as the reported meeting that was scheduled for yesterday January 4, 2012 with Premier Dr. D. Orlando Smith did not come off.

The vendors are particularly unhappy that since the vending area under the grandstand was refurbished they have been relocated from their regular spots while some have complained of being left without a stall, since they were allegedly given to new comers. Another complaint is that the stalls are too small and cannot accommodate enough persons for more efficient service.

The new President of the VI Horse Owners’ Association also came in for strong criticism from some vendors, who accused him of being “power drunk” and wanting ‘full control” and said the issue of the vendors being allocated should have been left to Government.

The aggrieved vendors have reportedly vented their frustration to 3rd District representative Hon. Julian Fraser RA, who sought to have their concerns addressed by Government and hence the scheduled meeting yesterday. Hon. Fraser confirmed to Virgin Islands News Online that the meeting did not take place but did not say if another date has been set for it.

Meanwhile, Virgin Islands News Online had spoken to a few of the vendors on condition of anonymity. According to one vendor, it is unfair that vendors, who have been offering their services there on race day for years, should have been removed from their regular spots and noted that several customers had expressed their disappointment when they turned up at their familiar spots at the recent Boxing Day races and found out that they were no longer there. The vendor also believes sales were lost as a result.

Another vendor said she was disappointed that the Virgin Islands Horse Owners’ Association placed the vendors where they saw fit. One vendor suggested that the regular vendors should have been allowed to remain at their usual area and allocate the remaining stalls to new comers. The vendor recommended that vendors should be given back their usual spots.

While others had a problem with the size of the stalls, one vendor said he did not have a problem with it as although the stalls are smaller in width there is much length to be utilized.

“There is nothing that can be done now either as it would only be a waste of money by Government to do any restructuring but this was not a plan that just came about because from what I understand it was always part of the plan for the whole establishment by the Department of Public Works,” the vendor said, while still adding that the new President wants “full control”. “He should have let the Ministers deal with the allocation of the stalls.”

Newly elected President of the Virgin Islands Horse Owners’ Association Lesmore Smith had said he hopes the vendors would soon embrace the changes which have been made for the good of the sport.

The vending area, which was upgraded just before the Boxing Day races, has 14 stalls. The wooden structures were replaced with a more secure and attractive concrete one.

Smith had previously said vendors had long complained about the poor condition of the stalls and the further discomfort posed to them when it rained.

“It was in a condition where it was all wooden frame with palettes on the ground…. and we ourselves look at it as being deplorable and we talked about it many times but it never came to fruition but fortunately since I have been elected President of the Horse Racing Association I made some requests and as a result of pressing and asking, a decision was made to go ahead with the project through the Minister of Education Mr. Myron Walwyn, who is now the Minister responsible for this subject,” Mr. Smith had told Virgin Islands News Online.

The sales will pick up, man. It is time we do things in an organized fashion rather than having vendors scattered all over the place. Let us show that we know how to do things properly. The mediocrity attitutde in business must go.

You see the problem with us here in the BVI we always want change and when we get the change we are not giving it time to work. Now tell me for the love of money, how big is Ellis Down that customers cannot find their usual stalls? That is why we will always have other othersiders ahead of us, we complain too darm much about evveything. I think the stalls look more decent and appropiate. What we need to have down there is the health department because all sort of people handling and selling food and I know that most of them donot have a food handlers certificate. I only buy drinbks I eat home before I go there.

If you are a regular vendor and by some chance when you come they tell you "sorry we don't have a space for you what will you do?". When you are accustom of working an area where you are comfortable I can understand but when you have to work in an area that can hold a minimum of one and a half person you have a problem. As a vendor you have to look at the equipment you need to have in the stalls and the workers, now when that become seriously limited the customers will also complain because they're not served properly.

I will say this if your are a regular at the Track when there are races you as a customer will notice there is a difference with service. In regards to the space if you look at it realistically two stalls can make one and at the end of the day you have more space for other vendors. The stalls are at least 9'-0" wide, as a vendor selling food and drinks you have a big problem. 1- you need to have at least 2 people working at the bar, 2-at least 2-3 people helping with food and at least another person assisting with cash. With all of that how can 9'-0" hold all those people comfortable. When the spaces weren't defined the vendors were using the spaces fine which was about two stall to make one and there wasn't a problem. Therefore that should have been done, all the vendors needed was proper drainage, outlets, running water, and of course a paved area.

Some of these food vendors need to go anyways! they need to go the college by Mr. Cline and get a course in food saftey and sanitation. The stalls look great in comparison to waht they where and there is more than enough space to hold the people that need to be there. In catering set up with the needed equipment. You cant have a whole damn kitchen in there its not your house our your restaurant.

I don't even know why Government waste their time and effort with such ungrateful people. You could build them a fully airconditioned room to sell from and let them have it for FREE then the first thing you'll hear is that it's too cold and the natural breeze was better. No matter what is done they will complain. The track has a hand full of vendors, everybody know who they rather support especially as it relates to buying food. The track is not that big that you can't find the vendor you're accustomed to. As long as they're there, you will find them. LOL! I really can't believe what we have come to, balling and moaning about a sign on a school now about stalls on a 2x4 race track that's only supported about 3-4 times a year! WOW!
