ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Despite being outnumbered and on foreign turf, Tortola's horses participating in the race card at the Clinton E. Phipps racetrack in St. Thomas on October 28, 2012 trotted away heads high as they put in a creditable performance.

In the third race of the day- the 6 Furlong Qui’s Rush which fetched a purse of $3700, Tortola’s Ease My Mind of the Pleasant Valley Stables came 3rd behind winner Dashing Pierrot of St. Thomas. Be a Gentleman, Winning Actor and Green Sand, all out of St. Croix also took part in that race.

Meanwhile, Gafallione of Tortola and owned by Alex Lake was out matched when he faced off against Twisted Dream of St. Thomas who ran in first. Sweet Sight came second and Diablo’s Fire came third with Gafallione bringing up the rear in the Liberty Day Invitational, That was the fifth race of the day and carried a purse of $5600.

All Country was scheduled to face Khun Dan, Tiger Glider, Voice of Faith and Gold Prospect in the feature race of the day, Possession with Intent, but pulled out as a result of injury.

While the crowd was small in St. Thomas today, a few loyal fans from the Virgin Islands traveled to the USVI to see their favorite pastime- horse racing. No horses from Lesmore Smith's Top Propirty Stable were in St. Thomas today.

There will be no races at Tortola's Ellis Thomas Downs until Boxing Day, according to the VI Horse Owners' Association's Public Relations Officer Dwight Cline.

Timely article reminding us of the need in the BVI for parimutuel betting as that is the reason st. thomas and st. croix can run so often.....

In the development of our horse races we must not forget the need for sound rapport and support from vets who interface to treat the horses…new vets can also provide jobs and careers for locals!

Horse back riding seems to be a better 'push' for tourism rather than horse racing....
