ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Yadali Thomas disclosed that she found her strength in God when she almost effortlessly won the Elmore Stoutt High School's Miss Fifth Pageant last evening, February 1, 2014 at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex.
Thomas etched her name into the history books by copping seven of the available awards, including those for Miss Congeniality, Miss Photogenic, Miss Popularity, Miss Intellect, Miss Poised, Best Evening Wear and she also tied with first runner-up, Mia Francis, for the Best Talent prize.
Contestant #1, Oundre-A Smith, won the prize for Personal Development while Francis was also adjudged Most Determined to Succeed and copped the Best Career Wear prize.
The pageant received tremendous crowd support and a very vocal and well behaved audience cheered all of the contestants and acts as they came on stage.
“You either have to do this or lose,” Thomas said afterwards about how she counselled herself on her journey to victory.
“I was starting to doubt myself when I didn’t have everything together and then in the last week I thought, ‘ok this is the last week, get up [and] go.’” she said, “Then I just found the strength from God”
Thomas, who appeared the clear crowd favourite for most of the pageant, chose to play a rendition on the flute for her talent piece and disclosed afterwards that this was her greatest strength during the competition.
While she revealed she was nervous at times and was also affected by some amount of technical difficulty with the microphone during her piece, she seamlessly overcame both to triumph in the end.
Asked what she enjoyed most about the competition, Thomas replied, “I think that I have found bonds with my fellow contestants.”
The newly crowned Miss Fifth Form said although she had a very good support base, she felt Francis had the most supporters and was gracious in saying that she thought Francis had done a good job.
Thomas revealed that she prepared for two months ahead of the pageant but didn’t feel her preparation was a hard task, “I tried my best, I know how to play the flute from the school’s band and it prepared me to work tonight,” she explained.
She thanked her family and said they had shown her the best support, even though they were not what she called ‘a pageant family’.
The pageant was hosted by Melvin Mitch Turnbull and his wife Jewel Turnbull and also saw performances by Kaywanna Pope, Noir Divas, Geek Squad, Second Edition, Mya Brown, Calden James and Phoenix Reloaded.

Four to contest Miss Fifth Form pageant tonight, Feb 1
- A variety of talent to be displayed says Chairperson
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Four outstanding young ladies will compete for the 2013/2014 Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) Miss Fifth Form crown this evening, February 1, 2014 at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex.
The contestants vying for this year’s prestigious crown in the pageant are #1 Oundre-A Smith, #2 Mia Francis #3 Jelifa Robinson and #4 Yadali Thomas.
While the pageant has historically been a fundraiser for the school, Pageant Chairperson Mrs Bisa Smith intimated that it is also an opportunity for the winner to represent the school in a very beautiful way.
According to Mrs Smith, the pageant was traditionally held in October of each year but for the past two years has been held during the Lenten term which allows the winner to reign during the final year of high school.
As prerequisites, contestants are required to have a GPA of at least 3.0 (B) for the current school year, in addition to being poised, talented and intelligent among other attributes.
The pageant does not only focus on the competitors themselves however, as this year, Mrs Smith assured that a variety of talent from the ESHS will also be on showcase, “We’re specialising in a lot of talent, not just the contestants,” Mrs Smith explained.
Miss Fifth Form starts at 7:00PM sharp and tickets cost $20 regular, VIP $30 and $10 for children under 10-years-old. Patrons will also have to fork out an additional $5 at the door.
Last year’s pageant queen, Ms Kadian Johnson will be on hand to crown the queen and has been described as a role model for the school and her role has been seen as integral.
The Miss Fifth Form Pageant was established in 1986 when it was first called the Miss BVI High School Pageant. Since then, it has become an event to look forward to every year.
The theme of this year’s pageant is ‘Success is not a Destination: It’s a Journey’ and corporate communications giant Digicel has been announced as the Platinum Sponsor in addition to ZRod and Follow The Movement (FTM).

I just keep wondering why are the same judges being used show after show. And, most of the judges last night are usually chaperons or coaches to other contestants in different pageant around here.
Yes, if they ask me I would be a judge.
