UPDATE: That's not the end! Hon. Fraser on No Confidence Motion
Hon. Fraser also said that leadership within the Virgin Islands Party is not a public issue but rather one which will be decided by the party’s congress at some time in the future.
The statement comes following the defeat of a Motion of No Confidence put forward by Hon. Fraser in the House of Assembly on July 26, 2013 and repeated denials of requests for the government to present various reports, documents and figures to the House.
“Granted, the motion was voted down, but that’s not the end. We will continue to pursue this government vis-a-vis the protocols; vis-a-vis the economy and rest assured you’ve got good representation here,” Hon. Fraser told reporters at a press conference called by the Opposition on July 30, 2013.
The opposition members indicated that there should be more press conferences coming up shortly in order for a closer level of interaction with the people of the Territory but could not indicate whether the VIP radio programme would be on air again in the near future.

Opposition Members deny power struggle in VIP
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Opposition Members, Hon. Julian Fraser, RA (3rd District Rep.) and Hon. Andrew A. Fahie (1st District Rep.) have steadfastly refuted claims that the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) is in a fight for leadership.
In an Opposition called press conference held earlier today, July 30, 2013 at the office of the House of Assembly, the two members showed up minus Opposition Leader Hon. Ralph T. O’Neal OBE (9th District) and Hon. J. Alvin Christopher (2nd District), but insisted this did not mean that there were problems within in the party’s hierarchy.
Hon. Christopher reportedly could not attend the press conference because of a prior engagement but it remained unclear what reasons prevented Hon. O’Neal from attending. Both Members indicated that the press conference was done to clarify issues raised during the House debate, hence the persons who participated in the debate, were the ones who were contacted for the press conference.
“Our roles as Opposition Members must not be crowded with our loyalty to the Virgin Islands Party. The Virgin Islands Party is not in a fight for leadership. We are not fighting anyone for leadership because power is given to God alone,” the First District Representative insisted.
Hon. Fahie also contended that theirs was the only party with a “tried and proven” constitution. He argued that this ensures that all issues, [whether] present and future, regarding the VIP will always be handled within the boundaries of the party’s constitution.
According to Hon. Fahie, while there were pressing issues within the Territory that needed to be addressed, this must be done by elected officials.
Hon. Fahie, who stated that the Opposition Members were not opposing simply for the sake of opposing, said following the Motion of No Confidence led by Hon. Fraser in the House of Assembly on July 26, 2013, absolutely none of the issues raised by the Opposition had been dealt with by the government.
“They side tracked all the issues; charges were laid before them of conflict of interest, nepotism, abuse of power and disregard for the protocols that they signed on April 23, 2012, putting the Territory in an irrevocable position for generations to come.”
Hon. Fahie also denied that the Opposition was not offering solutions to the government and argued that this was being done regularly, “we have been in the House giving the government solutions, we have named solutions in many respects even with the bank…” he said.
Hon. Fraser said once the Premier had established his position of reviving the economy using austerity measures which he charged had been fashioned after European models, he had stated that this would not work for the Virgin Islands.
“I told him, it’s not going to work. The model hasn’t worked in Europe, it’s not going to work here either and he has had several months now to realise that. He still hasn’t changed [and] my position remains the same.”
