DUFFS BOTTOM, Tortola, VI – Team St Vincent & the Grenadines has been declared the winner of this year’s International Night event held this past Saturday, April 12, 2014 on the Grounds of the New Life Baptist Church (NLBC).

The group won prizes for best ‘best tent’ and march past segments to seal their berth in the competition.

Team Jamaica finished in second place while team Virgin Islands, which won first place at last year’s event, placed third this time around.

Teams also won prizes for selling the most tickets for the well-attended event with team Jamaica emerging with the major prize in this category.

Representative of the Public Relations Unit at NLBC, Ms Marieta Flax-Headley described the event as a successful one and praised the contributions made by all involved.

Brilliant cultural displays highlight NLBC’s Int’l Night

DUFFS BOTTOM, Tortola, VI – An impressive and patriotic display of national colours, traditional costumes, national dishes and similarly themed items marked the New Life Baptist Church’s now annual International Night at its Duffs Bottom location yesterday, April 12, 2014.

Formerly Caribbean Night, the event has since blossomed into the International Night as a result of the church’s rapidly expanding membership and its accompanying diversity. Over ten countries were represented at yesterday’s event, including Anguilla, Antigua, Barbados, St Kitts & Nevis, Guyana, Jamaica, St Vincent & the Grenadines, St Lucia, Montserrat, the United States of America and the Virgin Islands.

Head of the NLBC, Bishop John I. Cline best described the union of so many different cultures in one location as a ‘melting pot’ and a ‘time of fun’. “When we come together for what the BVI represents in terms of culture it’s a melting pot of culture and we here try to promote that in creating unity in terms of national dress and the national foods and just the fellowship that we put together,” Bishop Cline commented.

A supportive crowd that numbered in the hundreds lapped up the entertainment and the wide variety of food and drinks on offer as Bishop Cline sought to highlight that the central message being conveyed to the wider community was one of unity. He pointed out that the better persons are able to know their neighbours, then the easier it is for them to be able to form a more harmonious community in the Virgin Islands.

The obvious national pride among the participants was clearly visible in their displays, especially during the Parade of Nations segment which featured a ‘dance past’ of sorts as flag waving contingents displayed their national costumes before a boisterous and appreciative audience.

The event also featured various cultural presentations by each group such as dances, songs skits and the very well received traditional plat pole by the Virgin Islands contingent.

Bishop Cline indicated that the International Night will continue to evolve as the church hosts the event in coming years and promised that something new will be on display in the future.

Why we should have won, it was a compitition and the best won. I am not much of a fan of Vincy (mainly because of the attitude of many of them), but I have to admit they really looked nice.

In all fairness BVI could not have won and if they did, it would not be fair. While their food was excellent and I believe it was the best food there, they were not organized. They were not uniformed. Their march pass was a bit poor and their talent did not speak to the culture or information about the BVI. I do not think platting pole should have been done as a talent. We have too much culture and talent in the BVI to have chosen that for a talent. I am a a BVIslander but I think the judging was fair. St. Vincent were all uniformed including the male representative and we must admit their national wear was lovely. They got the loudest applaud from the spectators. Their talent was also good.
