SLANEY, Tortola, VI – The driver of the taxi mini bus involved in the collision at Slaney, on the main island of Tortola, yesterday January 15, 2017 is in critical condition.

This is according to the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF), who also said its Road Policing Unit is continuing investigations into the head-on collision.

All five occupants of the taxi bus and the two occupants of the SUV were taken to Peebles Hospital for treatment following the Sunday morning collision.

“The driver of the taxi bus is in critical condition while two of the four passengers, all visitors to the island, are in stable condition. The other two occupants of the taxi bus as well as the one passenger in the SUV were discharged from hospital,” police stated in a press release today, January 16, 2017.

It said police inquiries indicated that the collision took place as the SUV, which was heading west, was attempting to overtake another vehicle. The taxi bus was heading east at the time of the collision.

The problem is the left-hand-drive vehicles, you cannot see unless you start to overtake. All overtaking is with a chance that nothing is coming. I just hate left-hand-vehicles, this was not design for this roads.

Did you not read this? The SUV was overtaking. The taxi was just driving. I have seen cars overtake - when things look tight, instead of slowing and returning to their original place like they should, they accelerate to try to make it.

Actually in Japan they drive on the left, with right hand drive cars, which is the correct way. They make left hand drive vehicles for export.

Who says one side is more correct than the other. People in the BVI has been driving this way for years and years without incident. these accidents have nothing to do with whether the steering is on the left or right. those driving right hand vehicles are always in the middle of the darn road.

Don't blame it on left hand VS Right hand vehicles. Blame it on bad drivers who don't care to obey the traffic laws

WE ARE NOT CHANGING OUR LEFT HAND DRIVE OR WHICH SIDE OF THE ROAD WE DRIVE ON. YOU PEOPLE COME IN PEOPLE COUNTRY AND WANT TO TURN IT INTO YOURS. YOU COME MEET SO AND YOU WILL GO LEAVE IT SO. PEOPLE JUST NEED TO DRIVE CAREFULL AND WITH SENSE. SIMPLE

@SCB go girl!! We British people were the first to drive right hand vehicles in the Territory.

Get well soon to all involved.

Let's be honest though, it was only a matter of time before a serious accident happened on our roads. The general driving standards are shocking and dangerous. Almost daily you see situations which could end in tragedy. So, please, everyone on the roads, try to drive with due care and attention.

This morning I saw someone narrowly miss the car in front of me as he veered across the road. I'm guessing he was looking at his phone. Take responsibility and drive with care!

Tonight a madman weaving left and right overtook several cars on both side of the road, after the main stoplight. He did all that so he could turn into.......Purcell.
