ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - As was firstly and accurately reported by this news site, the Orlando Smith Administration had raised objections to the class of 1992’s selection of Bevis Sylvester, the Regional General Manager of Delta Petroleum, as the keynote speaker for today’s June 28, 2012 graduation of the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS).

Information now reaching this news site from its well-placed sources inside the National Democratic Party Administration is that it's official - Mr. Sylvester of the class of 1992 was snubbed and will not speak today. Instead, Pastor Gregory George will deliver the school’s keynote address.

Pastor George is from the class of 1995 of the Bregado Flax Educational Centre. Many would remember also that Pastor George came to light in the 2011 general elections when he was critical of the former Premier Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE, who is also the 9th district representative.

It remains unclear why Mr. Sylvester was not allowed to speak as both the Ministry of Education and Culture and the class of 1992 remains tight lip. It also remains unclear as to the extent of the participation in today’s ceremony from the class of 1992.

When contacted, Pastor George said he had no comments to offer on the matter.

Mr. Sylvester, who also had worked for the government of the Virgin Islands both at the Public Works Department and the Ministry of Communications and Works, before becoming the Ministry of Finance Budget’s Coordinator, holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Management from Andrews University in Trinidad.

He was also a former independent candidate for the 8th district located on the eastern end of Tortola in last year’s Virgin Islands General Election. However, despite his credentials, intellect and how he has turned around Delta Petroleum and made it the number one place for gas and other related products in the VI, there seems to be some in the ruling National Democratic Party of Dr. D. Orlando Smith who are reportedly opposed to him speaking.

Meeting held with Premier; select a new speaker

It was this news site’s understanding that a meeting was held with Premier Dr. D. Orlando Smith in his office on June 25, 2012 with the class’ organising committee to allegedly request that they choose a new speaker, according to a source inside the meeting. It remains unclear what the objections are or whether the class of 1992 has surrendered to the request and selected a new speaker.

Most of the organising committee members were and still remain tight lipped about the situation, however, a spokesperson for the class told this news site that they were working on a press statement which has not yet been released.

The Government said it has no comment on the matter, however, they look forward to Thursday's graduation to see the students graduate and receive their certificates. They further offered congratulations to all the students and thanked everyone who had a role to play in the success of the students.

As of press time, Mr. Sylvester could not be reached for comments.

Is jail the only issue, what about cheating on your wife and things like that. These people are the same ones that need the votes of the same people that is being ill treated. NDP you said you learned there is no need for the elitist behavior to continue.

So that mean Judge Mathis isn't a role model? He was in jail but turned his life around and became a Judge.

Yes they brought judge Mathis here to speak to the youths. He always reminds us how he went to jail and turn his life around in 15 years.. Dr. Smith is out of place. BEVIS is an excellent choice to speak. What the he'll is going on here? People who we think have sense and is open minded is just as small minded as the people who is talking about BEVIS time in jail. We admired and turned out in great numbers to see judge Mathis (who went to jail), bigot is a problem for BEVIS to speak to the ESHS graduating class. How ridiculous.

They are right. It is the school's graduation and the school belong to the government. They have a right to accept or deny anyone. Bevis is a convicted criminal. DO you really want him in front of our young people? I do however agree, that he is a good person. It is sad that the school is in the middle of all the politics.

I believe everyone could do with a little history here and there: During the height of the African Slave trade: Several nations such as the Ashanti of Ghana and the Yoruba of Nigeria were involved in slave-trading. Groups such as the Imbangala of Angola and the Nyamwezi of Tanzania would serve as intermediaries or roving bands, waging war on African states to capture people for export as slaves. Historians John Thornton and Linda Heywood of Boston University estimate that 90 percent of those shipped to the New World were enslaved by Africans and then sold to European traders. Without the complex business partnerships between African elites and European traders and commercial agents, the slave trade to the New World would have been impossible, at least on the scale it occurred.

Is there is a criteria to be met that he has not satisfied? (Not that I am aware of). Let the public know so that this matter can be dealt with in a transparent manner. BS has been very successful over the years as a young professional. And no he's not perfect, but are we??? Come on BVI, let's be mature, but most important, fair about what is known as "due process".

Whether he speaks at the graduation or not it won’t break him. His class chose him their very own committee saw it fit for him to be the keynote speaker. It should be the class choice but government officials want to oppose. Ups to them… So what if he went to jail! It is public knowledge that he did. He suffered the consequences and rose about it and now he’s successful indeed and will continue to be. People just like to see others fall. God has forgiven him why can’t you! Learn to lift others and stop judging. He has done great things within the community since then and he has a good heart. Not everyone will be for him but he will keep his head held high!

This country has so much double standards. First the same politicians tell the young people who get in trouble that they must rehabilitate themselves and get back to becoming productive members of society. Second they turn around and say someone who has transgressed against the law and has redeemed themselves cannot be the keynote speaker. Third, they bring in persons like Judge Marttis who had a checkered past and say he is ideally suited to speak to young people and provide inspiration to them. Finally they say well it is okay for someone from outside with a checkered past to come and speak, but not their own. Now that is politics for you. Lesson to be learn young people, if you cannot live the perfect life as some of those in power think you should you are only valued for so much. Look the man did his crime, did his time and his convictionnhas legally been expunged. It is discrimitory to hold his conviction against him. You don't believe me check the Criminal Justice Alternative Sentencing Act 2005 passed by some of these very same legislators. Let him without sin cast the first stone. As if they are so perfect. Bunch of hypocrites if you ask me.

Boy HYPOCTITES you are right on the money. In this place only certain wrong is forgiven while others are blasted. You have Ministers of Gov't breaking the law by employing people without valid work permit and nobody makes a sound but they want to kill Bevis. His history makes him an ideal speaker because he made bad choices and still managed to turn himself around. Why can be praise Judge Mathis for doing that but for Bevis its a no go? This is wrong wrong wrong!!!

Really, the young people here don't have anything to look forward to if they go to jail for any reason, because it will follow them to their grave. I voted NDP, but if this is the way the leader going to behave, then I and others made a mistake. Dr- Smith, I know you well and I am imploring you please don't go down this path.. Is this really a Christian society that we live in? We can actually sin and ask God for forgiveness and do get forgiveness but not forgive our brothers and sisters? Who better to speak/motivate than one who has been to the bottom and dust themself off and begin with a positive climb? That's why we have so much repeat offenders because this society does not embrace forgiveness and rehabilitation. So what if he went to jail? All of you casting judgment think about how God would have treated Bevis before you next open your mouth! As for Government's interferrence, I trust that they too are not casting Judgment...everything does not have to be political and all about politics...the man is a member of the graduating class...he has done well with himself...he has a positive story to tell..I personally would love to hear from somebody who has been to hell and back and beat the odds than those who just keep saying "I', 'I' and behave as if they are perfect.... VIP? NDP? Can we please just STOP! My 5 cents!

Whereas it may be beneficial to have him speak to kids as a cautionary tale and how one can get ones life back on track, I am not certain that a graduation ceremony is the best forum for that.

To say "half", you're exaggerating. If anyone has been in jail in that school, it's only like two or three students. And I also think that Bevis' criminal history is a bad idea for him being a keynote speaker to those students. I'm not saying we should forever condemn the man, but what if a school child downplays the impact of consequences of crime just because they see he's successful and doing well? My opinion: find someone else.

Well the school children them say Mr. George of Church of God going get he reward at graduation for speaking out against Mr. O'Neal during the election campaign. He was hand picked by the Minister. This is just too much. Myron ya do good by ensuring the library get do but ya gone too far. Why is the government getting involve in the school's ceremony? Why do they have principals if they going be running the show and calling the shots. I agree with WOW a 100% this is going too dam far.

Why is that a reward? They should've let the students pick someone else instead of choosing for them.

Has anyone ever heard Bevis admit to doing wrong? Has he been actively working with young people to avoid his mistakes? Has he shown any remorse? Attempted to make amends? Repaid the money stolen? Or has he been thumbing his nose at the government he stole from while threatening to complain to the UK about the conditions at the prison that his royal highness was forced to endure? Wake up people. He is not someone I would like my teenager to emulate. I support the Minister on this one.

NDP you all undergarments showing!! granted there were objections to Mr. Sylvester couldn't someone else from the Class of 1992 be chosen. So much for tradition. It seems everything for the NDP has to be political, till Virgin Gorda they had to look for a guest speaker.
  • ok then (28/06/2012, 10:55) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
So who officially chose Pastor George as the keynote speaker? Was it the Class of '92, the NDP Administration or the School? Why wasnt tradition kept by having a member of the graduating class from 20 years prior to deliver the address. What has added insult to injury is that an individual was chosen who did not attend the the BVI High School nor who graduated in the 1992.

I voted for the NDP administration and though I'm still not in support of the VIP, it is appauling to know tradition has been broken and even more disheartening is the fact that the government has proven to our youths that we do NOT live in a democratic society. Are we teaching the graduating class to look down on their neighbour who fell on the wrong path. Donnie McClurkin said it well - We Fall Down But We Get Up!!!!!

What annoys me the most: to the person who said black people cant be racist, are you for real? Do you understand the definition of racism? Of course they can be!! The BVI where 90% if not more of the population is black, dont you think we're too far past slavery to be still blaming racism? This is why other ethnicities look down on black, because of the ignorant things people like you say. Holding up that stereotype. Shame on you!

You're a complete and utter fool. Black people can't be racist? Do you even understand what racism is? Your comment itself is racist.

@ hmmmm Look up the definition of racism and then tell us how black people can be racist. A people that is viewed as inferior by ALL other races and mistreated as a result cannot be racists in the true sense. That label belongs to the Whites and to a lesser extent the Arabs and the Asians. But the bitter truth is that the crown of racism belongs to the Whites...by all definitions.

TO: "BLACK PEOPLE ARENT RACIST"; I have live and travel all around the word for my 62 years of life. I have never met a racist black person in my life..what I have met is the black race fighting for justice, equal rights and fairness and that could never be racist...so its clear the group and race that believe in white supremacy and racism so I must agree with the comment on race...sorry I am too experience to disagree.

what did Bevis actually say that would characterize him as a racist? And if his statements were directed towards whites, what is the issue here? Why is it really an issue? All sorts of people in this country has done alot of racist things towards blacks and they're still "in" with the government, so why not similar treatment for Bevis? I am of the view that few Blacks actually know what racism/white supremacy really is about and how it affects blacks and other non-whites globally in all areas of people activity-economics, education, entertainment, labour, law, politics, religion, sex and war- and that is why they would make up such eroneous statements about Bevis. To truly learn about Racism/White Supremacy why don't you good folks get this book: The Isis Papers, the Keys to the Colors by Frances Cress Welsing. And if that is not enough, look her up on YouTube. You will then be better informed as to how this white supremacy system actually affects the lives of all non-whites globally. Then you can learn to write intelligibly about the subject of Color Confrontation/Racism/White Supremacy and not base your conversations on emotions!

why waste time with this topic when the world, universities and history have already established that one race has engaged in genocide and slavery for years, one race has killed 20 million jues and blacks, one race has continue to oppress people of colour why beat a dead horse. Bevis should have been allowed to speak but the NDP loves power and hates the people

Now Now Now I have no issues with the pastor but how ironic his speech spoke about the wrongs in his life down to the very marijuana planting. For some reason that pastor's speech only made removing Bevis as speaker even more of a shaking your head moment. Class of 1992 you all should be proud you including Bevis didn't let them hold you down better yet keep you down.
