ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Police have charged one man in relation to the robbery last Tuesday night at Brewley’s Superette in Purcell Estate.

Tim Daley, 21, of Thomas Land, East End appeared in the Magistrate’s Court today, September 16, 2013 on charges of robbery and was remanded to prison.

In the incident, a masked gunman had entered the Superette, demanded money, discharged a firearm and fled with a quantity of cash. No one was injured in the incident.

Commissioner of Police David Morris expressed his gratitude for the continued support and cooperation from the community.

“It is important that the work of police and community continue and increase so that perpetrators who would commit acts such as this robbery are removed from neighbourhoods and streets,” he noted.

A day after the robbery, Head of the Criminal Investigations Department Chief Inspector Duncan Williams in noting the brazen disregard for life in this incident, had made a special appeal for witnesses. He stated that it was the time for members of this community to decide to draw the line, come forward and give the information needed to identify this perpetrator.

UPDATE: Purcell community told to draw line against criminals

- RVIPF makes call following superette robbery

PURCELL ESTATE, Tortola, VI- “It is time for members of this community to decide to draw the line, come forward and give the information needed to identify this perpetrator. Just point us in the right direction, we will do the rest,” were the words of Head of the Criminal Investigations Department of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, Chief Inspector Duncan Williams in the wake of the armed robbery on a popular superette in Purcell Estate last evening, September 10, 2013.

According to reports reaching Virgin Islands News Online, a lone gunman entered Brewley's Superette sometime between 7 and 8 P.M. and reportedly made off with some $600. The perpetrator also discharged a round before making good his escape. No one was injured.

Armed bandit hits Brewley's Superette in Purcell Estate

- Shot fired, no one injured

A lone gunman pounced on a popular superette in Purcell Estate this evening, September 10, 2013 and reportedly discharged a round before making his escape.

According to reports reaching Virgin Islands News Online, the gunman entered Brewley's Superette sometime between 7 and 8 P.M. and reportedly made off with some $600.

"I can confirm there was a robbery at a Superette in Purcell this evening. No one was injured. Police are at the scene," Public Information Officer of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF), Diane Drayton briefly stated.

The store was open for business at the time of Virgin Islands News Online's reporters arrival on the scene, however, there were no customers. There were only three employees, two at the casheir area and one in the back of the building.

The owner Allen Brewley, who is a resident of Freebottom, related that this was the first robbery in approximately five years. "They broke my home, they held me up twice going home," he explained while adding that he was forced to reduce the opening time of the store to 8 P.M.

Mr Brewley estimated that approximately $600 was stolen.

Persons close to the business said the superette has been in operation for some 29 years.

Residents came out in numbers after the shot was fired, however, there was no trace of the gunman.

Employment registry or not, a lot of them don't want to work, they just sit on the corner during the day and plan their next robbery. It's Sad .

I agree with you Caay, I can't understand how people can find it suitable to blame a government for the lawlessness of others. If a person is going to be bad, they going be bad no matter what the government do. Everybody is responsible for their own action. Sometimes I don't have as much as I wish I had, but what do I do, take a gun and grab what you work for? No. The people who come on blaming government are the ones who are fuelling these bandits and they need to cool out and examine their words.

Who to blame? who to blame/ everybody looking somebody to blame except for themself. Alot of things the children them doing these days i blame the parents for it. alot of parents spoil their children at a young age, or send them out to rob other people instead of sending them out to look work.

The Uk Officers have already leave the BVI from the week after carnival. they will be back on November 20th when the new season starts and all the beach side bars are reopen.
    • Dear Diary (11/09/2013, 23:22) Like (2) Dislike (0) Reply
Incorrect. Some UK officers were away for carnival, but are all here now. If they were in uniform, they would no doubt be visible to you. As they have none uniform roles, then you may not know the work being done. But then again you are a stuck record, and are obviously misinformed, have poor sources, or are simple.
The Officers you mention are also on call 24 / 7 , even if they are enjoying a light refreshment, off duty, at a local establishment, and why not.
Your tone and that of LP is divisive, unhelpful, and could even be seen by some as racist.

So rather than face up to the people who are doing the crime, you want to have a go at those responsible for solving (not preventing). Well done!

The problem is that we are a small place, and people are related and all know each other. People here love to gossip and tell stories, and the Police are simply a reflection of society here.
More needs to be done to ensure what is private information remains private, and that sources of intelligence also remain protected.
@ trust will be pleased to note that the above issues are unlikely to relate to UK Officers, as they have no links here.
Crimestoppers protects persons who wish to give information. They are not based here, and the information can be given anonymously.
