ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Although not specifying in what way, the National Security Council (NSC) has announced that it has decided to “strengthen” security across the territory in light of the possible threat to security in the Virgin Islands.

On April 14, 2016 social media was buzzing over a statement which indicated that terrorists had planned to “blow up” the Terrance B. International Airport on Beef Island as well as airports in the US Virgin Islands.

According to the statement posted online, the terrorist act was planned for today, April 15, 2016.

According to a press release from the Department of Information late yesterday, April 14, 2016, the National Security Council (NSC), jointly chaired by the Governor John Duncan, OBE and the Premier Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith, convened a special meeting on the afternoon of April 14, 2016 to consider appropriate action in light of the potential security threat to the territory.

It said NSC reviewed the available information on the potential security threat to the territory and noted that the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force is working closely with other law enforcement agencies, including with the FBI.

“The NSC decided to strengthen security across the Territory as a precautionary measure and also requested the public to remain vigilant in light of a possible threat and to report any suspicious activity by telephoning 311 or 1-800-TIPS (8477).

“The NSC also advised that those persons with travel plans may experience limited disruptions.”

VI investigating airport bombing ‘threat’

- National Security Council to meet this afternoon to consider ‘appropriate action’

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) and the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) are responding to information received in relation to a possible threat to the airports across the Virgin Islands.

Earlier today, April 14, 2016 social media was buzzing over a statement which indicated that terrorists had planned to “blow up” the Terrance B. International Airport on Beef Island as well as airports in the US Virgin Islands.

The statement read: “The Sector San Juan Command Center received a call from someone identifying themselves as “Andrew Miller” stating that his friend is an ISIS Fanatic and intends on carrying out an attack on the Beef Island Airport in BVI. The caller stated that his friend, and others, plan to blow up the airport on Friday 15APR16 and also plan on targeting St Croix, St Thomas, and St John. No further information was gathered from the phone call. FBI law enforcement agencies have been notified.

Although we don’t know how credible the threat is, we strongly recommend your security team to take it serious and exercise vigilance.

I will forward any additional details received and notify you if the MARSEC level should change.”

National Security Council to meet

Meanwhile, Governor John S. Duncan, OBE, via a press release, indicated that he was aware of reports circulating on local social media channels about a potential terrorist threat to the territory.

“The RVIPF are investigating these reports. The BVI National Security Council, jointly chaired by the Governor and Premier will meet early this afternoon to consider appropriate action,” the press release from the Governor’s Office stated.

Meanwhile, the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force and the BVI Airport Authority have taken the “possible threat” seriously.

Airport security ‘reviewed’

According to a statement from the RVIPF today, April 14, 2016, BVI Airport Authority Managing Director Mr Denniston S. Fraser and Acting Commissioner of Police Mr Alwin James took steps this morning to review the security of Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport.

"We have received information of a possible threat to airports across the Virgin Islands, including Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport, and we are working closely with the FBI currently on the matter. We cannot yet be sure that this information is credible. Meantime, we have reviewed and stepped up security at the airport and continue to look at public safety as our main priority,” both heads said in a joint statement.

The advice given to people traveling, at any time, is to remain vigilant.

“Should you see anybody acting suspiciously or see any unattended baggage, please contact a member of security staff or other airport personnel,” the press release stated.

It further said the authorities have stressed that it is business as usual but have recommended that passengers present themselves three hours before their departure to give themselves sufficient time during this weekend's heightened vigilance.

The US did not take the Sep 11 threats seriously, the rest is history. We have nothing to loose by investigating and ensuring that this is a hoax, which for our sake I hope it is. Do you know ISIS? and what they will and will not do? Your comment concerns me greatly.

@just asking these are British isles..terrorists like soft targets. Their aim is to cause panic and disrupt normal way of life. If they terrorize us it is like hitting out at Britian. We should stop burying our heads in the sand and make belief nothing could happen to us. Let us all be vigilant hoax or not. This has cause me some concerns and made me more aware of what is happening around me

Whether this is credible or not - how likely is that anyone else with credible information will report such information since they blabbed the name of the informant and all the news. If there really is an 'Andrew Miller' his Isis 'friend' would surely not appreciate this. Why would they not protect the informant's identity?
    • IJS (15/04/2016, 08:45) Like (6) Dislike (0) Reply
First things first a statement like this that holds such power and has proven it's power elsewhere should never under any circumstances be taken lightly. Hoax or not don't question it as if it's not possible!Treatit in every way that it can occur any given minute. Things such as these has so many different avenues of coming to fruition. "why would they not protect the informant's name?" The fact that your thinking they are dumb enough to put their real name out there, you've already lost sight of what's really going on. When reporting such information it is more than likely that officials may ask for the person to identify themselves. Now, would it be really clever to put yourself at risk or even draw attention to you like that? easiest thing to do is make up a name. And that my friend is the least of your problem! Your problem is to only be vigilant and sensitive to any unusual behavior for your own safety. Erase the mentality that because such things aren't common around here leads to the conclusion that it cant happen to us! The world and the evil that exist in humans are beyond what you think you can control! Try being informed instead of just opinionated. #my2cents

Sure the FBI visiting Tortola has nothing at all to do with the Panama Papers. It is because IS want to make a statement to the world by blowing up the Terrence B Lettsome International airport. The financial services is the BVI's bread and butter. Can you imagine the loss of business if it was common knowledge that the FBI and other agencies were actually on island seizing documents and investigating all the dodgy clients operating through here? Aha blame it on IS, the USA's Frankenstein's monster.

Good luck with that then, Superman. Obviously everyone else who has ever been killed by terrorism and war didn't have God, which seems to be your argument? I think you will find that the IRA 'had God", ISIS/ISIL "have God" (they pray often enough, probably more than you do in many cases) and the PLF "have God"... Mysterious ways indeed....

Why they (Government) including the Governor don't put Customs on the front Line since the Premier and Wade Smith claims that Customs is the Number One Law Enforcement Agency. Can any one show me which Country in the World that this is even considered much-less to be mentioned. We are so Law less here in the B.V.Is. it is not funny. We just like to Bla-Bla- Bla. The POLICE is the MAIN Law Enforcement Agency in the B.V.Is whether you like them or not and they are doing a dam good job despite the challenges. By Law,they are responsible for Internal and External Aggression . No other Law Enforcement Agency in the British Virgin Islands, like it or not is responsible for that. Customs is a revenue collecting agency. Stop the hating and give Jack his Jacket and give respect where respect is due. Only in British Virgin Island it is heard of, that a Police Officer even on Duty can not walk through the Air Port. Every country you visit in this world there are Police at the Air Port and are they are free to move and go through the Airport. No Pissy Tail security officer,Customs or Immigration officer can Prevent them. Again only in the B.V.Is but now you all are calling on the same Police. These are the only time you all know them. But I will say one thing to the British Virgin Islanders that as much as you all don't like the POLICE, they will answer to the call, they will serve. Remember that they took am Oath and they will keep it DON'T ASK WHAT YOUR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU,ASK WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY. To all who continues to say" I BORN HERE" that it takes a lot more than that to be Patriotic. MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS THESE BEAUTIFUL VIRGIN ISLANDS
