ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Playing under the OECS umbrella, local squash player Daniela Schumann was knocked out of the Senior Caribbean Squash Championships in the Cayman Islands.

Schumann was beaten 3-1 by number one seed Karen Meakins.

Defending champion Meakins was up against the former German international, who has been based in the Virgin Islands for several years, and there was nothing to choose between them for four games.

Schumann held a narrow lead throughout the first game which she took 11-9, and led for most of the second too before Meakins accelerated at the end to level 11-9. Schumann's accuracy and hard driving were causing Meakins all sorts of trouble, but the 15-time Barbados champion is nothing if not a fighter, and she recovered from 7-9 in the third to take the lead 11-9.

She was in even more trouble in the fourth as Schumann led 10-7 but once again Meakins' determination was the decisive factor as she saved four game balls before taking the match 13-11 to reach a ninth consecutive CASA final.

"That was such a tough game," admitted Meakins. "She played really well, so much better than when I played her two years ago. It was just a couple of points in each game and I had to really fight to win the third and the fourth. I'm so happy, and relieved, to get through to another final!"

To reach the semi-final, Schumann had romped to a straight games quarter final win, 11-0, 11-5, 11-6, in just 18 minutes over Meagan Best from Barbados and also picked up wins against Larissia Wiltshire from Guyana, 11-8, 11-4, 11-8 and then Rhia Khan from Trinidad, 11-8, 11-5, and 11-6.

Kirstin Gordon and Zoe Sorrentino, also from the [British] Virgin Islands, but representing the OECS, had days of differing fortunes at the Championships.

Sorrentino lost in the first round, 11-9, 11-8, and 11-9 to Bermudian Susie Lacie but reached the third round of the consolation draw before being beaten by Marie Claire Barcant 6-11, 11-6, 11-8, and 11-9.

Kirstin Gordon was also felled in the first round, losing out, 11-1, 11-5, and 11-5 to Andrea Goodridge from Barbados. Gordon was then defeated by Wiltshire in the 2nd round of the consolation draw, 11-2, 11-5, and 11-5.
