ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Exactly one week after publication by Virgin Islands News Online, workers from the Public Works Department (PWD) took steps towards repairing two damaged sections of the Joe’s Hill roadway that appeared to put the lives of road users in danger.

PWD workers were observed yesterday, February 19, 2014 cutting out sections of the roadway and erecting signs to indicate the beginning of repair works to the damaged road.

The road had deteriorated consistently over the past few months and had gotten to an extremely poor and dangerous state, forcing vehicle users to come out of their lanes as they traversed the affected areas.

It is unclear what length of time the works will take to be completed or the estimated cost of the repairs being undertaken.

Efforts to contact Works Minister Hon. Mark H. Vanterpool and Director at the Public Works Department, Mr Jeffrey M. Skelton for comment on the matter were unsuccessful up to post time.

Joe’s Hill craters an accident waiting to happen - Resident

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Huge craters have developed in the Joe’s Hill road over the past few months and commuters are being forced to take evasive action to protect their vehicles as they use the roadway.

One resident who asked to remain anonymous, said the situation appears to be an accident waiting to happen as drivers constantly swerve outside of their lane to avoid the potholes and often end up in the path of oncoming traffic.

The road is affected on boat sides almost midway down the hill and the holes on either side are situated in close proximity to each other. The situation becomes even more dangerous as traffic becomes heavy on the roadway.

The Joe’s Hill road connects commuters from Road Town with far flung areas such as Meyers Estate, Brewer’s Bay and Cane Garden Bay among other locations.

It remains unclear when the road was last resurfaced but indications are that a dangerous accident can occur if the popular thoroughfare continues to be neglected.

Repeated attempts to contact Mr Jeffrey M. Skelton, Director of the Public Works Department as well as Minister for Communications and Works Hon. Mark H. Vanterpool for comment on the issue were unsuccessful up to press time.

Also when ascending Bellevue it has a patch that forces drivers on the side of descending traffic. That's an accident waiting to happen and needs to be addressed also.

That is strange, its February 13th and I am absolutely sure that Mark Vanterpool said all pot holes would be filled by the end of January. Since I know he has never said anything he hasnt actually accomplished, isnt it amazing how such a big crater could open up in the last 13 days!

Why Fraser didn't fix them when he was there? Only now people seeing craters? It's amazing all of a sudden problems that were here 10yrs and more are all of a sudden 'concerns' and need to be addressed now. When people were busy collecting govt money for nothing they weren't concerned then.

The Government of the day has been feverenlty working towards permanently fixing our Roadways. We all know the roads are bad, all over. It is very evident.

So please don't say, when these areas are fixed that " It is because of this News Site it was fixed" .

I nearly dead laughin and say "Wha??? U mean I gah wait till May?? Well sah!!" We were saying so in jest but I can assure you with a straight face that IF a distinguished visitor or anticipated group of tourists were to have to drive that road, IT WOULD BE DAMN FIXED. We too foreign minded in this place. Makes me sick!!! I drive this road EVERYDAY the good Lord lends me breath and it SICKENS me more and more everyday I drive it.

In the BVI you would think its impossible to build a road that doesn't fall apart in two years. There's no shame in asking the experts for some advice, PWD.... or at least google it or something

A minor point. This is what happens when you value load of talk from NDP over brains. Balance in all things, even who is appointed at PWD.
