PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI- Whether it is due to more persons becoming health conscious or the event becoming more popular, the first race of the 18th H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC)/Highland Spring Race Series kicked off on Tortola with a record number of participation on Saturday September 21, 2013.

“It was the biggest start ever at this past Saturday’s Highland Spring HLSCC run. 250 strong, ranging from as young as two to over seventy years old made their way through Paraquita Bay for race 1 of this leg of the series,” confirmed HLSCC in a press release today, September 23, 2013.

Defending champion (2011, 2012) Khiry Creque, no stranger to these race series, sailed to the finish clocking 11 minutes 25.47 seconds; shaving almost a minute off of his 2012 opening race. Not far behind in second was new-comer Guy Williamson who just a week ago snuck past Reuben Stoby (Saturday’s 4th placer) at the 10k Ceres Carrot Bay race. The lead pack also included Isaiah Horsford of the visiting team from the University of the Virgin Islands, the press release continued.

Creque, Horsford and Stoby burst to the front with Creque leading the breakaway crew before Guy Willliamson suddenly came into the picture to chase Creque while Horsford and Stoby faded.

A determined Creque had enough in his legs to hold Williamson (11:38) off while Horsford (12:06) and Stoby (12:17) had to settle for third and fourth respectively. In fifth position was Terry Charles in a time of 12:29.

Rounding out the top 10 were Teymahl Huggins (12:40), Ronique Todman (12:42), Ravindra Sukhu (12:43), Zebalon McClean (13:14), and Joash Victor (13:48).

Potgieter won the women's race in 15 minutes 03 seconds while second was Kay Reddy (15:16), third Anna Kinkead (15:50), fourth Kyra Romney (16:14) and fifth Rosmond Johnson (16:32). Also finishing in the top ten were Samantha Sukhu (16:38), Debrah Bell (16:41), Maureen Peters (16:45), Adenike Sicard (17:50) and Roslyn Gilbert (18:33).

Co-defending women’s champion Tarika Moses did not participate.

The one-mile race for boys (Under 9) was won by Sam Potgieter (7:37) while M’khori Crabbe finished second (8:13) and Izaiah Frett (8:30) third. Fourth was Sanjay Henry (8:45) followed by Sebastian Esser (10:50).

Jahtivya Williams (7:36) was first in for the Under 9 girls followed by Sofia Guerrero (8:55), Breneisha Haywood (8:55), Gabrielle Jermyn (9:10) and A’Keela McMaster (9:17).

The one-mile (under nine) race also had its biggest start with almost 40 little eager ones. The girls took the lead as Jahtivya Williams captured the first barely edging out the first boy Sam Potgieter who was followed by defending champ M’Khori Crabbe and Izaiah Frett respectiviely. Williams was joined by Sofia Guerrero and Breneisha Haywood.

In the Cross country- team arena, Teams Althea Scatliffe 1 and 2 seem to be the teams to beat taking the first and second positions and followed by Francis Lettsome in third. Cedar Secondary with a strong contingent continues to keep that division alive while Rotary of Tortola and Cedar School PTA continue their winning streaks in their team categories.

Race director Stephanie Mrs. Russ Penn summed up the day’s event as ‘awesome and exciting’. She also expressed that “the huge gathering of so many; some coming for the first time, while others for conditioning, the challenge, the civil rivalries, the unique social setting or most important to simple move for life makes organizing the event even more rewarding for the college. The Highland Spring HLSCC Races is definitely an event that everyone should consider participating in,” the press release stated.

HLSCC is expressing thanks to the event’s main sponsor Highland Spring Mineral Water, distributed through Tico.

Races return to Virgin Gorda (race #2) on Saturday October 5, 2013 at 6:30 A.M. at the College’s Virgin Gorda Centre.

For more information about the race series, persons can contact Mrs Russ Penn on 852-7216.
