ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - A director of International Car Rental (ICR) has allayed fears and speculations surrounding the driver of one of their vehicles found abandoned at the seashore at Pockwood Pond on August 19, 2013.

Mr Peter Sorrentino told Virgin Islands News Online that the person whom they had entrusted the vehicle had apparently lost control of it and skidded off the road. He said the person escaped without injury and had left the scene to  get help. "He went and call the wreckers and they went and got the car. It is here now," Mr Sorrentino told Virgin Islands News Online.

He was also confident that the individual did the right things following the accident, including giving a report/statement to the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF).

Two days after the accident, however, the RVIPF had said it was yet to speak with the driver of the crashed jeep. It could not be confirmed up to post time whether that report was subsequently made.

Driver in Pockwood Pond accident yet to report to police

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) is still to speak with the driver who abandoned a crashed jeep at the seashore in Pockwood Pond on Monday August 19, 2013.

The jeep with registration number RT 0132 and reportedly belonging to International Car Rental (ICR) has since been removed from the crash site but, according to RVIPF Public Relations Officer Ms Diane Drayton, the RVIPF is still to determine who the driver of the vehicle was at the time of the accident.

Ms Drayton also confirmed there have been no reported injuries and police are continuing their investigations.

Effort to make contact with the management of ICR proved futile as the general manager was reportedly out at the time and could not be reached for comment.

This is not the first time that a vehicle has ended up off the road and into the sea in the Pockwood Pond area. On April 1, 2013 a vehicle plunged into the sea after the driver allegedly fell asleep.

No one was seriously injured.

Jeep discovered in sea at Pockwood Pond

- vehicle was unattended

POCKWOOD POND, Tortola, VI - A jeep carrying the registration number RT 0132 was discovered partially the sea at Pockwood Pond this afternoon, August 19, 2013.

Officers of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF)said they responded to a call of an accident but by the time they arrived on the scene the occupant/s had already left the scene.

When this news agency arrived on the scene shortly after 6 P.M., the vehicle was still in the sandy bank of the seas, two corners away from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

No one, except for the police officers, was on the scene and it could not be ascertained if those involved had fled the scene or were rescued and taken for medical attention.

From all observations the jeep was heading further into the Pockwood Pond area when it careened off the road. This was assumed by the skid marks on the road.

The extent of the damages to the vehicle couldn not be determined because of the position of the vehicle in the sea.

Virgin Islands News Online is working on more details to this story.

People need to drive at a reasonable pace especially visitors who do not know the roads

The visitors are about the only ones that drive a proper pace - most of them are terrified by the idiots we have on the road here!

Remember that not only visitor drive rental, local do also. All they have to do is see who rented the vehicle simple.

I would bet that based on the fact that this is a rental car and most of the people who come here from abroad have been taught to drive properly and to respect other road users.....,I've got $1000 says this is a LOCAL who binned the Jimny. Any takers?
