ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- “I would like them to take some of the feedback given tonight and truly incorporate that, from styling to paying attention to the details. Being a star is about paying attention to the details,” were the brief words but sound advice by Senior Programme Director at BET, Mr Kelly Griffin to the 7 finalists of the Follow the Movement (FTM) ‘Who is Next?’ talent show held on December 6, 2013.
The seven persons who have advanced to the finals to be held in March 2014 are Sasha Wintz, Calden James, Marvin Bramble, Kassandra Malone, Rochel Lewis, Epik & Neeks and Kamyce Penn.
The persons to advance were decided by a panel of judges that included Mr Griffin who spared no bones in calling a spade a spade and giving the necessary encouragement and credit when due. In fact some persons were even uttering the name ‘Simon Cowell’ in comparing Griffins style of evaluating the individual performances. But the BET executive was just being as real as it gets but did have a very positive overview of the show.
“There were some great, great talents, some great raw amazing talent that just need a little polishing here and there and I think that with the right resources they can collectively be a force,” Mr Griffin told Virgin Islands News Online after the show.
The seven remaining contestants will be involved in a workshop in January, 2014 on the recommendation of Mr Kelly Griffin, who suggested that stage presence and choreography among other things, be taught at the workshop for the March Finals of the ‘Top 7@7’ show.
Meanwhile, President of FTM, Craig Lake aka DJ Push Pop described the elimination round on December 6 as “awesome” and that he was certain those who attended accepted the change in format and really understood what it was about. He expressed thanks to the judges, local music professionals Dr Drexel Glasgow, Mr Andre Brathwaite and Dr Allison Flax-Archer who were instrumental in helping to change the format whereby popularity was the least of the criteria looked at.
Regarding feedback from Mr Griffin, Mr Lake told Virgin Islands News Online in an exclusive interview that “He [Kelly Griffin] is definitely on the go that we have something, that we have talent and he really wants to see what comes out of the training for the seven finalists when the guys come down in January.”
Mr Lake further said the 7 finalists will be participating with a live band in March. “So everything is going to be live, even backup singers. So it’s a full-blown entertainment schedule for them in March.”
The FTM President said the first weekend in March 2014 is being looked at for the staging of the ‘Who is Next?’ finals but that would depend on the availability of the labels to attend also.
One of the highlights for Mr Lake is the seminar for young females held at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) on December 6, 2013. The FTM had teamed up with the Ministry of Education and Culture to host the seminar that featured guest artiste and US R&B star Melanie Fiona. “It was a closed door seminar with the 5th form ladies and a few of the female college students. Even I as a male was not allowed in as it was exclusively for the ladies to let loose and explain themselves.”
Appreciation for a successful staging of the seminar was expressed to Romney Associates and Ms Corine George of Speedy’s Ferry and Transportation Services.
Further appreciation was made to all the other sponsors; however, Mr Lake was keen to mention Mr Shan Mohammed of Nagico Insurance and Speed Queen Laundry. “ The support from Mr Shan Mohammed was just over the top,” Mr Lake commented.
