NANNY CAY, Tortola, VI - The owner and operator of the yacht, 'Celebration of Love' is counting his blessings equally with that of his losses incurred in a fire yesterday, October 30, 2013.

Owner of the vessel, Mr Malcolm Herman told Virgin Islands News Online yesterday that he was happy to learn that the damages to the interior of his vessel were minimal. Nevertheless, he said it would be sometime before he would be able to have it operable again as the repairs are likely to extend over a long period.

He said that based on his observations, the fire may have been electrical in nature.

Public spirited persons avert major boat fire at Nanny Cay

NANNY CAY, Tortola, VI- A small yacht was saved from complete destruction after public spirited persons rushed to successfully extinguish a fire that had broken out on it sometime around 3 P.M. today, October 30, 2013.

According to the owner of the vessel, Mr Malcolm Herman, the fire apparently originated in the cabin of the 6-year-old boat named Celebration of Love. He was not certain on the extent of the damages as officers of the BVI Fire and Rescue Services Department were not allowing him at the time to enter the badly scorched cabin at the time Virgin Islands News Online was on the scene.

This news site was told that persons on other boats nearby rushed to help put out the fire and prevented it from completely destroying the boat and possibly spreading to other nearby vessels.

Persons on the scene praised the quick response of the Fire and Rescue Services Department but said it was due to many fire extinguishers available on nearby boats that allowed persons to quickly put out the fire as the fire tender could not reach the dock area.

It is being suspected the fire may have been electrical in origin.

Mr Herman related he was scheduled to go on a charter tomorrow with the boat. Luckily for him he has a friend indeed as someone discouraged him from cancelling the charter by offering to lend him his boat. This occurred in the presence of Virgin Islands News Online.

Only on October 25, 2013 a vessel was completely destroyed and another damaged in a fire at Fort Burt Marina.

Wow, we are living in a territory that have so many boats and boasts of being the sailing capital of the caribbean but now one or two fires and the fire tender can't get the pump working...........private citizen lends water...........fire tender cannot reach the dock area..........public spirited persons use fire extinguishers from other boats to out fire. What is really going on here? This is a disaster waiting to happen? I hope the powers that be are taking note as we are definitely not prepared as it may seem!!!! What are the insurance companies thinking???? Enquiring minds would like to know.
