ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- It was our newsroom that first published an accurate story that a female officer from the Ministry of Finance was questioned on Saturday April 8, 2017 and released over alleged leaked government information.

Now, according to officials, the probe into the so-called leaked information has ended with no charges laid against the civil servant.

It is unclear what specific information she was been investigated for or accused of leaking. It is also unknown if others are also being investigated, as there are no whistle-blowing laws in the Virgin Islands to protect public officers when they see corruption and wish to go public with such information.

Why they leak?

Over the past six years, because of the lack of transparency of the ruling National Democratic Party regime, their crack down and criticism of the media, their refusal to answer the Opposition questions in the House of Assembly and when they do, it's most often not truthful, many public officers have been leaking information to the media, the Opposition and civil society.

The Information is usually on policies that hurt the country, issues of alleged corruption and when the elected officials tell lies to the people, public officers and even other politicians leak the correct information.

For some seven years now both the media, the Opposition, the Governor and talk show hosts have been calling for a Freedom of Information Bill, however, the government has refused to bring forward such a bill after years of promises.

See previous article published April 9, 2017

Civil servant questioned over leaked Gov’t information

Word reaching our newsroom is that a civil servant was questioned by police over alleged leaked information to the media.

This is according to senior National Democratic Party (NDP) sources. The sources confirmed that one person from the Ministry of Finance was questioned on leaked information; however, the source did not provide details as to what information caused this action.

The female officer was questioned on Saturday April 8, 2017 and released, according to information reaching our newsroom. The two NDP sources declined to give details as to who ordered the investigation.

Communist country- VI

There are no Whistle-blowing laws in the Virgin Islands to protect public or private officers who, because of love for country and good governance, share information on activities that are illegal, unethical or corrupt within the public or private sectors. In addition, there is no Freedom of Information Act in the British Overseas Territory of the Virgin Islands (VI) where the media or ordinary residents can request via law information of public interest and records of spending, agency books and other government actions not made public.

The lack of these two key pieces of legislation is associated with communist and authoritarian countries and not “a modern democracy” as Governor John S. Duncan OBE once described the VI.

Over the past eight (8) years plus, especially with the advent of online news media, the public and media houses have relied on information obtained by anonymous sources from public officers, elected officials, including Ministers of Government, and private citizens for information that government will not make public.

Fake news on Social Media

Within the last 48 hours social network has been flooded with fake and erroneous information that the Ministry of Finance officer was questioned over “the Ports Authority Project and other drug related suspicion.” Our NDP sources confirmed that this information circulating is, “libellous, malicious, erroneous and downright misinformation.”

Our newsroom will bring more information as it becomes available.

DEMAND FREEDOM OF INFORMATION AND WHISTLEBLOWING LAWS NOW!

We will not remain silent and continue to allow this decadent veil of quiet exploitation, victimization, intimidation, underhand secret deals in high places with special interests, crippling levels of conflict of interests, and corruption to continue without accountability.

If our government was poisoning our water to reduce our local population and a civil servant in his/her/their good conscience and morals were privy to this atrocity, should he/she/they remain silent under an oath of abnormal confidentiality and unbalanced loyalty? I unequivocally argue a resounding- NO! DA#N IT!!!

THE TIME HAS COME TO OPEN THE CASKET!

The Time has come for ALL of US, who still have a ticking compass of morals and conscience, to STAND-UP!

WE MUST STAND UP FOR OUR RIGHTS! NOW!!!

@We the people. The casket is already leaking and they know vino is not afraid to expose their stench, so they are trying to intimidate and instill fear- the oldest trick in the book- to plug the whole. We haven’t forgotten how baldhead tried to intimidate (directly and indirectly) Luce, Carl, and Titley. And what they did or tried to do to Sonia, Guy H, Guy M., and others, so we are fully aware of their tactics and techniques. But not this time, we will remain vigilant inside and out, because our people cannot afford to get caught in yet another rigged elected. This gang is wicked; the struggle is real. VINO, please keep the lights on and the fire burning.

As well they should be question asked about confidential information. Freedom of information can never mean everyone taking sensitive information and deseminating it to whoever at their own volition. What would not be released and for what purpose for a fee? People must learn that there's some thing call professional and ethical and that person shows they're none of those. How much did it take to get this information? what is their interest in this sordid affair because many in various department will have to vigilant with whom hey speak because of this leaker. There are no FOI act and when it comes about it will have some constraints attached. This was probably calculated to garner support for the party, happily it only show where values lies by some employee.

The government don't think we have a right to information that concern is so what we can't find one way, we going get it the next. Yes, we are all duty bound in any profession to be confidential, however, civil servants are also tax payers who are left holding the bag of this wreckless government. Ah you talk once what you see is wrong and blatant misconduct. Expose them yes.

Since when is the English interested in ensuring that our books are balanced? Yes, they are interested in cutting, cutting, cutting, to put Virgin Islanders out of a job and have them unemployed and lose their inheritance. Oh, if we only knew who the British and English are, we would never be putting things out there for the "devil" whoever he or she may be to hear it. The UK's face is changing and they are looking some place to go. What do they know, enter a country and displace the indigenous people. Let us stop playing with these people. They are after our land, buh they are interested in seeing how country run. VI too good for black people because they live in 300-year old croaking flats. You doubt me? Ask them why they do not want to live in peace and harmony with 'local people," as they call us.

It amazes me how you all are throwing around terms that you have zero clue about! Communism? Freedom of information. Democracy? Picking up terminology you only heard on US media or entertainment and using them like they supposed to be a part of who we BRITISH Virgin Islands are? America is a failing system! The election of Trump exacerbates that point. So why are you all full speed ahead trying to pick up everything the USA puts down? Freedom is not free! It comes with sacrifice and responsibilities. Our media core has not shown any sense if responsibility in its reporting over the past 15 years. Facebook posts are used as news stories. Hearsay is headlines. Libel and slander are rampant with no repercussions. With such irresponsible reporting, we are not ready for Freedom of information here! A bit of communistic ideas might actually do some good. Oh let me guess Communism is all bad right? Because the media said so and you didn't research the tenets if Communism or Socialism yourself. We are not ready for the repercussions of many of the things we say we want.

Take up my bag and find anorher. Most people tell you dont leave before you have another which is wisdom but wisdom also would tell us don't take death. For people to read, sing and place flowers on our grave. Choose to charter our coast less stressful job may help us to live a bit longer.
As we sit back and allow time to pass by story have a way of unfolding it self. Don't care how long we try to hide truth must come out.

I always read the blogs for the true news and to feel the pulse of local comment. Although this is useful there is a need to protect whistle blowers who want to highlight issues and even corruption in organisations including government. The Barclays Bank story in U.K. today shows what can happen when someone tries to identify a whistleblower
