WICKHAM’S CAY 1, Tortola, VI – A source close to our newsroom has said that not just two but several persons were injured as a result of an accident at the cruise pier construction site when the boom of a crane fell on a tug on Sunday March 8, 2015.

Speaking to this news site, an acquaintance of some of the injured said that the number of persons reportedly hospitalised was nowhere close to the actual number of injured as a result of the mishap.

“I had some friends working on the pier project site and they call me and tell me they in hospital and when I went there I see about eight of them. All of them had head, injuries, hand injuries, foot injuries and so on. All of their clothes were wet, I don’t know if they had to jump overboard or what,” the source said yesterday March 9, 2015.

This news site reached BVI Health Services Authority’s (BVIHSA) Public Relations Officer (PRO) Ms Franka N. Potter for an update on the condition and for confirmation on the number of injured. She told us she would look into the situation and get back to our newsroom with information but up to post time had not done so. Contact was also made with Chief Executive Officer of the BVIHSA Darlene A. Carty-Baptiste who asked us to speak to the PRO.

We also tried to reach Mr Percy Rhoden of the contracting company Meridian Construction Company for a comment on the condition of the injured men but to no avail. However, another source from the construction site said that the two persons he knows to have been hospitalised as a result of the accident have since been sent home.

This news site will continue to follow this story and bring you updates when available.

Two injured as crane boom collapses on tug @ Ports Project

‎‎ - This brings to 3 the number of accidents on the controversial Ports Development Project

WICKHAM’S CAY 1, Tortola, VI - Two persons were reportedly rushed to Peebles Hospital following an accident at the Cruise Pier Development Project work site at Wickham’s Cay 1 on Tortola today, March 8, 2015.

According to information reaching Virgin Islands News Online, the men suffered minor injuries when the boom of a crane collapsed on a tug.

Reliable sources informed that a main cable on the crane snapped resulting in the boom crashing down on a tug that was close by. Several persons were on the vessel at the time but only two persons reportedly sustained injuries, which were said to be minor.

Contact was made with one of the lead persons on the project, Mr Percy Rhoden, who confirmed there was an accident but said it was minor in nature.

3rd accident on controversial project

This brings to 3 the number of accidents on the controversial Ports Development Project. On December 18, 2014 there was a collision between two barges while on October 6, 2014, a truck ferrying stone at the work site overturned into the water as it was negotiating a narrow pass.

It is not clear whether this mishap is likely to cause further delays to the multimillion dollar project already behind schedule.

To suggest that this accident was minor indicates a lack of understanding of risk by the project management. What if persons had been killed today, would that still be minor. With so many accidents occurring within a short period, a review of risk management is obviously required before fatalities do occur.

Remember someone always die when ever there is a project over there. The last one was the young man from guyana who drown while they were working on the cruise ship tender pier. It involved a crane which dropped a hammer which missed its intended target and struck the beam the man was standing on. He fell in the water and was trapped under water. His poor family got next to nothing. While this maybe ruled as an accident it shows that these people are more concern about making money than the safety of their staff.

If safety is lax, can you imagine following the exact engineering, plan and construction? If this is all new construction, why is there a need for the sound of jack hammers on concrete? A mistake? wouldn't it be poured within specifications? These types of mistakes and mishaps cost money and eventually someone's health or life. Who is supervising?
    • clown (10/03/2015, 23:45) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
i see you have no clue about construction. then need the jack hammers to drill the concrete to put in the sockets in the buildings

Hope those injured make a quick and full recovery. The really scary part of this is not the first picture, but the second showing all the workers that are on the deck of the barge without hard hats or life vests. Is that the contractors project manager (leader) in the blue talking on the phone with nary a hint of safety equipment on? Seriously, if there is no safety leadership from the leaders, can you expect workers to take safety seriously? Interesting that Mr. Rhoden claimed this was a "minor" accident - I wonder what a serious one looks like?

This whole thing a mess! Want to see worse, wait till the low bid builds the airport!!! I watch the clamshell dig the turning basin, Just like using a teaspoon to empty Lake Huron. I bet no large boats to tie up before year end. Then elections and the new government does all it can to stop the project. Sound like the hospital? Sound like Bi-Water?

Vino you on the ball sah. Hope for speedy recovery. Now everybody affected by all this messy state of the country. Look how they have the public roads some they didn't even have to touch. I never see so much thing going on the road before. Do we really have the manpower for all this to finish in reasonable time. I'm concerned for my safety and children safety.

Am sorry for the injuries as a result of this incident.
However, my concern is the fact the project is going very slow. Is this really going to finish soon or in the next 2 years?

Evidently the people in charge are not aware of the section in the Labor Code as revised in 2012 that requires the implementation of health and safety programs.

The comment "that the accident is minor", demonstrates just how callous, uncaring and narcissistic one is. My best wishes go out to the victims of this incident, and pray for a speedy and full recovery.

Construction projects are inherently dangerous. As such, it is imperative that all safety regulations, policies, practices, procedures.....etc should be strictly adhered to protect the health and safety of workers and the general public. Every project should have a safety plan that is effectively executed. Lax attitude on safety can result in serious injuries or death. Thus, every effort must be exerted to avoid safety incidents.

Further, every project must have quality control and quality assurance plans. Additionally, full risk management and risk assessment evaluations must be conducted and plans put in place to effectively manage the risks.

At this time, I do not know what factir(s) contributed to the crane accident. And an investigation will unearth the cause(s) and corrective actions taken to prevent future safety incidents. Nonetheless, generally, to the maximum possible the work area/zone area of weight handling ewuipment should be free of personnel. Safety accidents, mishaps, incidents....etc cost----money, health care services, debilitating injuries, death.

If an investigation is conducted....(which there should be). Keep in mind the project manager considers this to be a "minor" event though from a property loss point of view, the repair and replacement costs based on the pictured would hardly be considered trivial.

This shows how sad this Territory has become. A piece of equipment on a major project in our Territory had issues and caused injury of persons on the job and look at the stupid %&** nonsense that people choose to talk about? How did that become political? Its your right to like or dislike the project but come on man, these are people's lives here and we here clamouring to score political jabs as a result. WE ARE SICK!

Get well soon to the injured.

There will be no investigation that we the public will ever hear about as they have likely already strategized a spin to put on this - a faulty cable. Of course there will be no mention of maintenance records, hoisting loads or the crane operator that was told to shut up and just hoist. You can bet the farm that the investigation will come from the insurance company when they try to recover $$ from the damages - it will be a tough sell to collect on this one.

I wonder how many other "minor accidents" and "minor injuries" we have not heard about? The contractor a gag order in place (called a non disclosure agreement) for all staff on the project that threatens legal action against any who might speak out. Where are the whistleblowers of the BVI when we need them to prevent the "minor accidents" like this from occurring.?
