VIslanders jailed in Antigua for cocaine possession

- Luke Joseph sentenced to 6 yrs imprisonment; Lloyd Frett gets 3 yrs

ST JOHN's, Antigua - (Caribarena Antigua) Luke Joseph and Lloyd Frett were sentenced when they appeared in the High Court in Antigua before Chief Justice Keith Thom on Friday, March 1, 2013.

On February 5, 2011 both men were arrested and charged after the vessel they were sailing in was stopped by the Coast Guard. The boat was searched and 169.65 kilos of Cocaine was discovered. The drug is valued at over US$2 million.

Joseph, 63, was sentenced to six years for possession and intent to supply the said drug and fined US$300,000.

Frett, 40, was sentenced to three years and fined EC$100,000.

Justice Thom said the fine was a signal of the severity of the offence; adding that Antigua was being used as a trans-shipment point and consideration must be given on the effect the drug can have on the life of others.

The court also ordered that Joseph be given access to medication; since he is suffering from uncontrolled diabetes.

The offenders were represented by Sherfield Bowen, while Anthony Armstrong appeared on the Crown’s behalf.

I find that the sentence was quite lenient. I was expecting longer jail time for both of them. I hope Joesph has that US$ amount for his fine, otherwise he'll be there for couple more years.

Why do you sound so hateful? I am sure that you are living in the BVI and collecting a nice pay to do with whatever you please. When persons commit crimes, it is right that they are dealt with by the Court and punished accordingly, regardless of their nationality. Stay on the right side of the law, otherwise . . . .

Antigua smarter than us. They take your money and send you back where you from, not keeping you there for a set of years to feed you.

It made sense from a protectionist standpoint. Fine them enough to pay for their stay in jail, assist in funding the police drug force, and addiction clinics, and a bit more to make them think twice about doing it again. Then deport them and restrict them from re-entering the country. Now they have an international criminal record which should follow them where they go and they would be banned from coming back into the country. People and authorities in their home country would know that they were convicted of drug trafficking and an eye would be on them. There you have punishment and awareness and assistance (funding) in fighting the activity socially and criminally.

You also keep them from using up limited space in the local prison for local criminals and more violent offenders. The people who you can't just deport and keep them from causing issues in the territory; The criminals who need to be rehabilitated before being put back into the free population; those are the ones who you need to keep the local prison space for.

Sounds strange... but it might work.
