VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI – “They had to party alone with their Premier, madam who responsible for the planning got to understand that without us Little Dix is nothing let them party with the Premier and see if the Premier going to do the job we do.” This was according to a worker of the Rosewood Little Dix Resort on Virgin Gorda.

Several other employees confirmed that the Family Fun Day held yesterday January 19, 2014, was extensively boycott by workers of the Resort. The workers were peeved as they were not invited to the function that was held in honour of the Resort’s 50th Anniversary on January 18, 2014.

“Even if they didn’t invite all of the staff let’s say because is over 320 of us what about those persons who are still around that has over 40 years of service? The funny thing is they interviewed most of those long serving person and they still didn’t see it fit to invite them, this management style is very poor and lacks respect and regards for certain class of people, sorry to say but it’s the truth,” said a close family member of an employee.

Some of the workers said that after they highlighted their grievances which were made known to the public via an article published on this news site on January 13, 2014, the management “felt bad” and tried to make up by covering some of their tracks.

“After it was on VINO and all over Face book, they tried to take shame out their eyes and like a few days after they change deh mouth on who and who we can bring to the family fun day,” this news site was told.

The employees with whom this news site spoke, all attested to the fact that they were told that the Family Fun Day was going to be held on Sunday January 19, 2014, but they were not allowed to bring anyone along as they were going to be having the fun day with Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith.

“Now tell me by good God a Family Fun Day and you can’t bring your partner much less your children!” exclaimed an employee. He further explained that subsequent to the management being blasted via blogs and on Face book, the decision was changed.

“VINO, after them comment from bloggers they realized their mistakes and they sent out a memo saying that we could bring we people but to hell with them we boycott deh a#$,” said a peeved employee.

This news site confirmed that just a few workers turned up yesterday for the event with the Premier. “Hell, what they going do fire over 300 employees because we ain’t go they fun day! I bet not,” said another employee.

Fired employee wins case for scone and dumpling firing

Workers had broken their silence about the injustices they have been facing in the company especially from sometime around the close off of the first half of 2013, to recently, after an employee was given the marching order for taking leftover scones and dumplings.

Several attempts were made to contact the fired employee but to no avail. However, persons close to him have confirmed that he won his case against the management on the ground that he had no previous record of misconduct on the job and the acquisition against him didn’t necessitate dismissal without a previous warning.

A source in the Labour Department, who insisted not to be named as they do not have the authority to disseminate information to the media, did confirm with this news site that the man won the case.

Several workers also said that he did win the case but what they couldn’t confirm if he has or will be returning to work at the company. They couldn’t say either if he had opted for any form of compensation. “If I see him at work only then I would be able to say if he go back, but he is not even keen on speaking to the press because he is a senior Christian man in his church and he did say to me he don’t want all that sort of publicity,” one employee told this news site.

Several calls to the Resort to have the promised interview with the Managing Director Mr. Edward Linsley were futile. A senior official in the company Ms. Caroline Whitlock responded to our calls but failed on her promises to have Mr. Linsley return our calls.

Little Dix employees call for removal of Managing Director!

- Man fired for allegedly taking left over scones and dumplings

SPANISH TOWN, Virgin Gorda, VI – On the brink of celebrating its 50th Anniversary, workers at Rosewood Little Dix Hotel and Resort are calling for the removal of their existing Managing Director Mr. Edward Linsley, who they alleged is responsible for the unhappiest times of their employment in the company.

“We have persons here with over fourteen, fifteen years of service and everyone would tell you that since this man came here it has been the worse period for employee/management relationship. Everyone here is unhappy,” one employee told this news site.

They said that employees’ morals are at an all time low at the resort. “Because of this man we are losing some of our best, left right and centre. They treating people too bad here, not even a warning letter or nothing,” another employee alleged.

The group of employees include some at managerial positions who thought the time was ripe to make their concerns open to the general public when one was fired last Friday January 10, 2014. “Come on, this man took a few stupid scones after a dinner which we were going to throw away and he was fired for that, this is the limit,” claimed a male employee.

“To be exact it was two left over scones and two left over dumplings from the staff cafeteria which were going to be dumped in the garbage anyway…it was good fresh food but dinner was done and as usual they throw all foods left back in the garbage,” another further expounded.

The group said that the fired employee was considered as a ‘stellar employee’ who has never had a single complaint against him in the company. “That is one of our most humble employees around here that does his job very well.”

The incident caused employees to become further infuriated and they described the Managing Director as “the security manager”. “That’s all he does all day, he just jumps around in the cafeteria to see what employees have on their plates, all he does is to check to see what you are eating,” another further alleged.

The employees, who have opted not to be named for fear of victimisation, said that since the Managing Director took office sometime during the latter half of 2013, he has not held one general staff meeting. “We are accustomed to general staff meeting and these things, since this man come nothing of the sort has been happening, he just have the entire staff unhappy and uncomfortable,” said an employee.

Several efforts to reach the Managing Director Mr. Linsley were futile. On Sunday January 12, 2014, he had communicated through one of his senior staff, Ms. Caroline Whitlock, that he was not available to speak with us before his management meeting today, Monday January 13, 2014.

The sad state of affairs at the Rosewood Little Dix Hotel and Resort comes shy a few days when they would be celebrating their fiftieth anniversary.  “We sorry that we have to have this in the public at a time when they have all the big ones coming in but we can’t hold back no more it’s too much, the owner coming too so let him read this and see exacting what’s going on,” said a female employee.   They alleged that in addition to the management not hiring the service of any local company for the planning and decorating of the anniversary gala event, the staff was not invited to attend.

“We who worked our butts off to maintain the integrity of this resort none of us was invited to the 50th anniversary celebrations. Furthermore we are accustomed to having an annual year end staff party, not even that we are not getting. We are humans here and we are definitely unhappy,” said a staff.

The employees are also calling on the Labour Department to seriously investigate the person who has been awarded the contract to do the decoration. “I am absolutely sure she does not have a license nor a work permit to do this and Labour needs to look at that.”

This news site looks forward to the promised response to the many allegations from Mr. Linsley, and will provide an update once it materializes.

It is bad that the employees have low morals at this time. I hope they increase soon so that morality will be better at Little Dix.

Morals, look at it from both sides of the coin. It is wrong for an employee to food and put in his vehicle, but what about the gratuity that is suppose to be paid to employees that is being stolen every other week? That is where the real questions have been asking and one seems not to have the answers.

Well I would very much like to hear the Managing Director's response to these allegations before casting gudgement. Of course I expect him to have a totally different story from that of the complainant.

Right is right and wrong is wrong but I am amazed at how many foreign managers are so quick to terminate an employee for simple things with absolutely no regards for the individual and what it will means. I believe that they think it is like where they are from where persons live a very impersonal existence and a terminated employee can move on to any part of the country and seek work and they will never see or hear of that employee again. That is not the reality here the work place, home, and community is affected, and I am amazed that many of these individuals are not briefed or oriented on the realities of these small islands. You must coach, counsel, teach and train our people. They MUST be given every chance to succeed before being terminated. If this story is true this sounds like apartheid and we need Mandella back.

I empathise with the staff however there are rules to be followed as set out in the contracts you all eagrly signed. Yes the food was being thrown away but if it states you are not allowed to take food from the premises then these rules must be followed. Perhaps it is poor management previously that has brought Little Dix to this point where the MD must follow all his staff and tighten the belt to the last hole, where as before the pants were too loose and too much was going astray. Think yourself lucky that you have a staff canteen where you are provided food for free.
    • FYI (13/01/2014, 10:22) Like (11) Dislike (7) Reply
For your information the canteen food is not "free". A deduction is taken from the employees every pay period. So just so you know employees pay for the food being served at the canteen.
      • FYI2 (13/01/2014, 15:18) Like (13) Dislike (1) Reply
Please stop posting incorrect information on the forum-- no deduction is taken from the employees checks. If you are an employee, I urge you to investigate your check and pin-point the line and deduction that reflect that.... if you are not, please ask the person feeding you the wrong information for this information. Too often, we go along with what is said instead of getting off our behinds and do our own investigation....

The deduction is coming from our GRATUITIES !!!! Incase you didnt know how it works. They dont mess with your checks as you can back track your hourly wages and your hours!!!

Yes, rules must be followed and then when broken, given a warning and after that then a termination. I too would like to hear the other side of the story and only then will I see who is right or wrong. I have found some people feel because they have been in positions for years that they act as though they are the boss, I have seen this. Some long time employees don't like change either, so I will wait and hear both sides.

@ upset, Then get another job who will appreciate you and pay you so you can pay your bills and eat. The longer you stay there the worse it will be. No one is holding you and Little Dix is not the only place to be. To give your all and get nothing in return is sad but it is your choice by staying there. If you don't leave and look for another job, how will you ever do better. I work in Tortola and make minimum pay, but my boss treats me well and give monetary incentives sometimes. The way you say you are treated is disrespectful.

Yes rules must be followed. I resides in Florida and work for one of the major hotels here as a Manager and I am from the Virgin Islands. I have gone through many new Managing Directors and after introduction to the staff a managers meeting is held and the rules of the hotel is stated in this meeting with a reminder to keep our staff in line. I am sure that this is a custom of the staff taken home any remains from the kitchen that is going to be dumped. I have seen employees fired from this hotel as simple as taking home a slice of stale cake with out a warning. The public needs to know if this is stated in the employees hand book or if they sign at their beginning of employment.

I was shock to learn about the amount of people who are leaving Little Dix Bay and they seems to be the ones who of high level performance. I live on Tortola and went to the Airport to pick up some friends last week ,I saw a representative for LDB who I never saw before, she was definitely not in the mood to do her Job. I was shocked to learn that the very nice young lady who used to be with that company for over 14yrs recently resigned I asked the question why .a few taxi men and others around the airport I asked confirmed she left the company and since then the standard has dropped where meeting and greeting LDB guest are concern. For those who have gone to the Airport and see this lady work you think she know these people all of her life someone like her will make it far because she stood out for that company and perform her job with HIGH standard.if the management is poor then let it be corrected before you end up losing all the people who have great passion for what they do.

Now this employee has his own charter plane company and the manager should be getting gas as all the other white managers get free gas! In addition to everything else being free! . They come and cring their family and everything is free! Expensive homes, cars, cable free! Light bill free! Why don't they try living on the meagre paycheck they pay the employees!

I will tell you this; it is not about the scones and dumplings, there is a bigger agenda out there. If this security was not under paid he would have been able to do like the big boys do.

Stop with your nonsense, I worked in a hotel in Europe where a white worker was sacked by a white manager for taking food from the hotels garbage for his animals. The rule was no food to be taken without express permission of a manager. It may seem petty but if you break the rules it happens. Nothing to do with slavery,
    • Rosethorn (21/01/2014, 10:19) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply

Stop your nonsense. You just making sh*t up to try to turn it into a racial thing that casts employees as poor helpless slaves abused by evil white men.
To do this you ignore the simple fact that hotels and restaurants all over the world have the same rules about staff taking food. Even in China where there are no black and white. Even in Europe where both parties most likely to be white. Even in many other countries where managers and waiting staff are both black, or green or blue.
What you do when you bring up this little card of yours, is you destroy the REAL and IMPORTANT arguments that need addressing.
Bad management, management abuse of workers - this is a serious problem that needs addressing. Workers need to voice their grievances. Labour needs to see if these managers are mistreating employees. This needs looking into.
      Also:
Bad worker attitudes, breaking of house rules that employees have agreed to abide by - this is another issue that needs looking into and might need addressing by Labour.
Stick to the issues, don't start your race war bullcr*p. No one benefits from idle minded baby talk when there are real problems to deal with.

I see a growing trend in the Virgin Islands where individuals are recruited to fill key positions and use their authority to abuse staff. This can not only be seen in the private sector but the public sector as well. Managers have a key role to lead, train and motivate staff; however it seems that they have added belittlement to that category. People feel because they are managers they can talk down to their employees which is very disrespectful. Whilst I agree that they may be disgruntled employees, I am of the opinion that most time these managers take advantage of their employees. Remember we are always referred to as little islands so most times they take the angle as people on these islands are hand to mouth and lack any common sense or any type of formal education. (This is my opinion). It is time for BVIslanders, belongers and other citizens who truly contributed to the growth of this territory to rise up and put on their full armor as this is just the beginning.....more to come.

Lets stop picking and bickering. There are more issues than the food and some one should listen. You only react how you know how. We may think they are making the wrong move but maybe this is the way they know. Government should sit and listen to employees then listen to management and then meet with them both. No one should be held at hostage after otherwise action should be taken. We need to start looking at the small man as we always say. government needs to definitely deal with this issue, we are having a different generation and we need to start realizing it. The mentality is different and we have to work together to make a better community, better work places or else stop investments because it will get worse. If we don't teach and train people if we don't teach the right history in schools we will forever be in this situation. Also we need to train more bv islanders and belongers in the hospitality industry so we can have more local management positions.

    Good comment Concern & management.
The employees will strike, then that will get some attention. It is what Union does to get attention. We do not have union here and labor and government is always on the employers side, because they get the free dinners and free hotel nights.

If all of you would just not show up to work during their busiest time and never go back, they would suffer greatly. There is a life after LDB you know. Look at all the thousands that don't work there and we survive. I rather be dead and free than be a live Slave.

it. I agree in hotels here management don't value the hardwork of employees if the resort manager friend with one manager even not working don't know what he doing their friendship remains and lead to good harworking employees resigned this is what happening now.too unfair those managers not thinking see what happening to their company if they loss their good hard working employees

It is highly disrespectful that 50 years is being celebrated, and some of the retirees have not been invited. Even the families who sold their land for peanut cents so that LDB could be established should have been invited to this celebration. LDB and all the other resorts in this Territory need to display more social responsibility. Employees ought to be compensated for their labour, not just at the minimum wage. The benefits and salaries issued to foreign senior management personnel need to decrease and pass on such compensation to the employees. After all, it is the employees doing the work.

If that situation was in districts 1 or 3 you would have heard the alarm sounding from the Hons Fahie and Fraser. What happened to the district 9 rep.? Nothing happens in that district without him getting involved. Maybe he ain't wake up yet!

This culture of entitlement will be a hard and long one to break. Both the employer and the employee have to accept this is a different BVI today and we all have to stop looking in the past and wishing for those simpler times. This kind of behavior was ignored in the past when things were good because the kind of profits which were taken out of the country and the rampant fraudulent handling of the service charge, which still goes on today was so much greater than what was being stolen it really did not matter. Things have changed and only those companies who understand the value of their work force and recognize that minimum wage is not the national pay rate but a rate instituted by government to ensure that legal slavery is not practiced in the country and who proactively make their companies better by making their employees accountable and rewarded for their companies success will be the ones to survive.

Ok now we didn't show up for more than one reason but the biggest is because the night of the 50th they have a video showing of the employees who helped the hotel to where it is.My God a video? Half of these people still alive they were supposed to be invited so the people can see who they were in person. They so spiteful they will start giving us three and four days off to say it slow just to hold on to our gratuity for the fun day party ,you all think you know these people next payroll will be nothing

Then why in the hell are you all still there? If it's that bad what the hell? Quit and find something decent. All this complaining and it hasn't gotten any better, but worse. After worse, is fired. Why wait for that to happen? Look out for yourselves now and have something solid to work with.

You all have it too good at LDB that's why you bi..h so much. The only advise I can give is if you are not happy with Mgmt style, resign and go else where. You don't have to put yourself through all that stress- worry kills and some of you are going to 'drop down' stressing out yourself. You all should sit and consider how terrible you sound in the ears and eyes of the public. Sheer nonsense, if you dont like the style, leave, go some place else and see if your unkind words will put you on top. Little Dix has gone to the dogs, because the majority of employees are there only for the 'dollar', they do not care about anything else. Such a shame, but may God help them to see the light before it is too late.
